Have a look at this for a gander at what you're buying. You're getting hosed a bit on the price, yes.

There appear to be an almost infinite number of notebook review sites; the challenge is finding one which has your notebook on it. Good luck...

It's nice to see what they are suggesting. I wish I had time to do my own research, but just not going to happen.

512MB is the amount of RAM the system has. This is an OK amount, but if I were buying a new laptop now, I would get 1 GB.
60 GB is the hard drive. That's a fine size.
WXGA is the video resolution, which is fine.
WXPP is Windows XP Professional - the OS, which is also fine.

Laptops are expensive - the model we purchase here (with has a 14.1 inch monitor, and 1 GB of ram) runs us $2200 - and we're an educational institution.

When I have shopped for laptops (twice in just over a year--ugh), I have been warned away from Sony because of concerns over their durability. I do (or did and hope to do again) a lot of traveling and my laptops consequently take a fair amount of abuse.

I just bought a high-end (3.something GHz processor, 1 Gig RAM, 100G hard drive, large but I don't know how large disply) for about $2000 including the extended warranty. So that does sound high.
