I would argue that killing animals for sport, for fun and not for survival, is a mental illness which is socially acceptable.

I'd argue that the term "mental illness" tends to be defined relative to social normatives, so the argument is self-contradictory; liberal society tends to consider blood-sports and animal cruelty as unacceptable - as it should be, in my opinion; but trying to pass off such things as mental illness implicitly takes away responsibility from those that do such things, and can be a dangerous strategy!
