Title: On The Subway (지하철에서)
Rating: ??
Pairing: Sehun/Jongin
Word count: 1k+
Summary: There's nothing outwardly striking about this boy (with the exception of his absurdly pretty lips) but somehow, Sehun is intrigued.
Based on a
song by AKMU of the same name.
Sehun's morning routine has been unchanging for a little over a year now. He gets up at 7:30 am on the dot, takes a quick shower, grabs a bite to eat (usually a buttered piece of toast) and is locking the door of his apartment by 7:50 am. All it takes is a 10 minute walk (5 minutes if he's rushing) to reach the nearest subway station and by the time he arrives, the morning crowd is only just starting to file in.
Today is no different.
Sehun steps into the subway car and beelines for the seat farthest away from the door. He plops his backpack down along with himself and settles in for the 20 minute journey. He rummages through his bag for his headphones and lets out a soft noise of triumph when he manages to locate them among the disorganized mess of books, coursework and stationary.
Once his headphones are snug on his head, a newly discovered indie song crooning from its speakers, Sehun takes a look around at the other passengers.
For the past year, Sehun's been using the subway to get to university (choosing to live off-campus unlike his other classmates) and every day, he sees the same type of people.
There's always the regal-looking business man; tailored suit, polished shoes and gelled hair, and of course, smartphone practically glued to one hand and briefcase in the other.
Then there are the high school students. They tend to congregate in groups, usually spending the whole journey chatting excitedly and laughing about god knows what.
And then you'll see university students like Sehun himself. Usually seated in corners of the subway car, either reading a book, sleeping or listening to music (much like Sehun is).
While observing the passengers, Sehun's eyes are drawn to one person in particular. There's nothing outwardly striking about this boy (with the exception of his absurdly pretty lips) but somehow Sehun is intrigued. The boy (man?) is clad in a sweatshirt and a pair of faded blue jeans, dark brown hair covering his forehead and eyes that look like they haven't had a wink of sleep in 3 days.
Sehun just looks at the boy; not bothering to hide the fact that he's staring and after a few minutes, he concludes that the boy is simply attractive and that's why he's intrigued. But there's something else, isnt't there whispers a small voice in the back of his mind.
A faint memory sparks in his brain but before Sehun has the chance to analyze it, he's reached his stop. So has the boy apparently, because he's rushing to the doors as soon as they open. But in his hurry, Sehun sees that he's left a notebook on the seat. Sehun hurriedly grabs said notebook and exits the subway car before he loses sight of the boy.
A tiny feeling of anxiety creeps up Sehun's spine when the boy is nowhere to be seen. Fortunately as soon as he's near the exit, Sehun spots the boy rushing towards his direction, forehead scrunched up in worry.
Sehun lifts the notebook and waves it in the air, trying to get the boy's attention. The latter's eyes immediately dart to Sehun when he hears Sehun's shouts of "Hey!" and almost comically, his face contorts into an expression of relief.
As soon as the boy is in front of him, he's thanking Sehun profusely, a tinge of pink on his cheeks for being "so careless". Up close though, the boy is much more attractive than Sehun had given him credit for and he mentally takes back his previous thought of the boy being plain-looking.
Sehun's desperately trying to figure out why the boy seems so familiar because he's definitely seen the boy somewhere else but he's interrupted when the boy sheepishly asks, "I'm sorry but I didn't catch your name."
"Um, it's Sehun."
A look of recognition flashes through the boy's eyes.
"Sehun? As in Oh Sehun?" the boy asks, voice coloured with disbelief.
At this point, Sehun is feeling a little creeped out because a total stranger knows his full name and really, how many people are there named Oh Sehun. But then, the boy interjects once more.
"It's me, Kim Jongin!"
As soon as those two words leave Jongin's mouth, a whole barrage of memories assault Sehun at once. Playing tag in the park, telling ghost stories at night under the safety of their blanket and an unsaid goodbye.
"Oh my god Jongin it's you." Sehun says, looking a little dazed because the last time he saw Jongin was before said boy moved to Japan. When they were both 9 years old.
Without hesitation, Jongin pulls Sehun into a hug. And there they stay for a minute or two, both in disbelief at finally seeing each other after 11 years.
When they finally part, they both stare at each other with wonder in their eyes. Jongin; always the more talkative one in their duo, snaps out of his daze first and asks Sehun questions at rapid fire speed.
"So how have you been? You're in uni now I'm guessing? What high school did you go to? How are your parents? Oh yeah and what's your older brother up to now-"
Sehun claps his hands on Jongin's shoulders. "Calm down, Jongin. I'm not going anywhere. Just breathe."
Jongin takes a deep breath, cheeks colouring in embarrassment. "You're right. We have plenty of time to catch up." He replies, a bright grin on his lips.
Sehun shakes his head in amusement. He hasn't changed a bit, Sehun bemusedly thinks.
"So, you wanna go and grab some coff- oh wait, you hate coffee. How about some bubble tea then?" Jongin asks with a knowing look on his face.
Sehun laughs a little sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck. "Yeah, that sounds nice."
Jongin opens his mouth to say something else but Sehun beats him to it. "But I have a class in-" Sehun quickly glances at his watch. "about 15 minutes. So how about we meet up for lunch?"
Jongin grins. "Sounds great."
After an exchange of phone numbers and another long hug, they part ways, both of them walking with a bounce in their step and wide smiles on both faces.
