Brief Friday afternoon question. After hearing yesterday about the break up of a 15+ year long relationship, I had a large outburst of cynicism, and a debate at work concluded that the only lifelong relationships most of us have known are those of older people - grandparents mainly. This is something I've been thinking about quite a lot recently... Going long-haul seems to be quite unfashionable these days. I'm in a stable and functioning long-term relationship. Have I got it completely wrong?

A reactionary, old-fashioned side of me despairs at the contemporary shallow, brattish, instant gratification culture possibly to blame for people ditching other people just for being different to themselves.

The more modern me salutes the freedom and choice afforded to those who previously would've been shunned and cast asunder in less enlightened times.

Toughie.

I think the latter can seem selfish if there are kids involved and they could have managed if they were patient for just that bit longer. This of course is coming from someone whose now ex sister-in-law could not tolerate her husband not having become rich instantly and abducted her kids, leaving him with a broken heart and childless without even allowing him proper contact with them. Hmm /rant
