[Reflections 'Verse] Haven't You Noticed Suddenly I'm Bright and Breezy?

Oct 05, 2010 11:09

After the promised two days of travel, Gaila and Scott had finally found the colony they had been directed to, contacted it and been given permission to land. Everything had been smooth sailing from then on. Almost too smooth. She had been welcomed with open arms by the colonists, a hero for having escaped the Empire's clutches with not a scratch ( Read more... )

He had been awake since sunrise, locked away in the room he and Gaila had been granted. His morning ritual was the same as it had been the past few days - he rose, bathed, tended to his injuries, and gave himself a dose of the medicine that kept him from falling victim to the Orions' pheromones. Apart from the small collection of medical supplies, he had little still in the way of belongings; he'd been given clothes, and a place to stay, and that was about it.

He was currently standing at the window, gazing out at the unfamiliar landscape, his hands clasped loosely behind his back. He missed his ship. It was difficult to sleep at night, without the distant hum of the engine. The food was just as bad; he'd never thought he'd miss replicated meals, but he'd have given anything for some assurance that he hadn't left the only thing he held dear behind. This wasn't home. The few occasions he'd left his room, he could feel the eyes of any passing Orion on him. They were fascinated with him, fascinated by the idea that an officer ( ... )

Scott's familiar voice filled the room as she laid there, comfortable and warm underneath the sheets, and she had to admit that having him in the same room was an undeniable comfort. All things considered, anyway. Gaila was smiling as he spoke, the dry tone one she had gotten used to during the time they'd spent together. He wasn't happy here. That much she was able to tell, and really, she had expected it. It would take him a long time to adjust to his surroundings, if he'd even adjust at all. One day, they would have garnered enough trust and resources from the colonists to get them their own ship, but she was afraid that possibility was a too distant future for him ( ... )

The trouble was, even if he was all healed, there wasn't much for him to do anyway. Housework, maybe, to keep up the charade of him belonging to her. Other small, mindless tasks. Patience, he cautioned himself, turning his face back to the window. Patience. Can't rush this. For now, the goal was healing, getting better, but the end goal... The end goal was still acquiring a ship, and getting off this rock. But Gaila was right to worry that the possibility of having his own was too distant in the future. He was a patient man, when he had to be, but for all he knew it could be years before he returned to space ( ... )

Actually, given the fact that they lived with a woman who had a handful of servants already, including her husbands, there probably wouldn't be a need for Scott to take care of any housework. A little cooking maybe, if there was a need for it, but since the household chores were already taken care of by their landlady, Gaila could find something else for Scott to do in the colony. She could talk to some of the farmers to hear if they needed help, or employ him as a repairman. There was always something that needed to be done in any village or town, and his long background as an engineer spoke of his experience and talent. If he worked hard, they'd be showing their dedication to the colonists, which would be nothing but favourable for them. The problem for Gaila would be the lonely hours on her own, and the fact that she would be leaving him to fend for himself. But she trusted that his medication and cunning nature would keep him safe out there when that time would come. They'd find something for him to do, no problem. As soon as he ( ... )
