does anybody know anything about building a website? Actually, does anybody know anything about step one.. buying a domain name, and which site one should do that through?

people have suggested godaddy to me before. i have my domain on there, but it's just redirected to my journal, no site actual site.

and i know a bit about building a site, mainly the design side. i am not too familiar with the programming side. however, a lot of the design programs will put in the programming for you...it's just when you need more complicated stuff, like shopping carts and a database on the backend, when you need a programmer. if you just need pages with information on them, that's easy enough.

i made this site pretty much all by myself. it's nothing horribly exciting, mainly just screen design with some links. someone had to help me with the upload and whatnot, but it was simple enough.

what do you need a site for and what do you need it to do?

I liked the set up at GoDaddy, but then I got totally confused.. I went through Yahoo small business, and bought the domain name, but I have no idea what to do henceforth.
Maybe you could come over for martinis or something and help me work through this one night when you are bored lol.
Its for the cakes. I do specialty cakes, and I am going to do a small website to promote it.. but it doesn't have to be fancy. I just want it functional and at least cute lol.

i had my domain through yahoo at first...and then after my two years were up (that i paid maybe $10 for), they wanted some ridiculous amount of money to renew the domain (like $20+ a year). so then i spent less than $20 on godaddy to get my domain for another 3 years. but my domain isn't for business purposes, so perhaps that makes a difference regardless ( ... )

Why, yes, I do know something! I have done websites through Yahoo Small Business - they are cheap and you can do a lot with them. You download their site builder program and it's super easy to use. Basically you creat text boxes to type in and you can upload pics. They also have clip art for borders, frames, pages - it's really cool. I think it starts at about $12 - $13/month for the domain name and you get oodles of emails. I think the site is www.yahoosmallbusiness.com - but you may have to Google (or Yahoo!) it.

Looks like you've got a lot of help with this project! Did you download the Yahoo Site Builder? I found it very easy to use because it was like drawing text and picture boxes in a Word document - you can change font size and color and fill colors for the boxes. Even Billy who never did that in Word found the site easy when he did one earlier this year. Have fun!
