Colin had just begun to drift off to sleep when he felt it. At first, he thought he was dreaming. He shook off his drowsiness and thrust his hand into his jeans pocket. Immediately, his fingers closed around hot metal. He stifled a cry of joy as he bolted off the ratty couch that had been his bed for the past two weeks.
"Colin," Dennis said in a loud whisper, rushing into the room and holding up his DA galleon.
"I know," he said. "I felt it, too."
"'We fight. Apparate into the Hog's Head,'" Dennis read around the edge. He looked at his brother. "This is it."
Colin felt a shiver of excitement. Since the creation of the Muggle-Born Registration Commission, he and Dennis had been in hiding with their parents, trying to blend into the Muggle world, unable to use any magic because they were both underage. They'd been waiting for word of some sort, eager to join the fight. They wanted to be of some use to Harry.
"I'm ready," Dennis said. "Let's go now."
Colin hesitated, gathering courage for the conversation he'd planned for weeks. "You have to stay behind."
"What? No!" Dennis whispered angrily.
"Mum and Dad need you," he said. "If something happens to me…"
Dennis made to protest, but Colin cut him off. "I have to try to Apparate. When I do, it will alert the Ministry. I have to get as far away as possible or else you'll all be in danger."
"But…"
"We can't both risk Splinching ourselves," Colin continued. "And someone needs to protect Mum and Dad… in case something goes wrong."
Dennis glared mutinously at his brother, but nodded. "All right."
Colin ran to get his rucksack, and thrust an envelope into Dennis's hands. "Here's the rest of the money we have. If anything happens, get Mum and Dad to Gran's house. I know we didn't want to involve her, but no one would ever find you there."
"Aren't you going to-" Dennis began, glancing toward the small bedroom their parents shared.
"No. They'll try to stop me. Just tell them… tell them I had to go. I think they'll understand."
Colin and Dennis looked at each other awkwardly; then, Colin stepped forward and hugged his brother tightly.
"I'll contact you as soon as I can," Colin said.
"Good luck."
Colin nodded and slung his bag over his shoulder. With a glance back at his brother, he carefully opened the door to the flat. Quickly, he stepped out into the corridor and hurried downstairs. Outside, the streets were quiet. There was just the slightest chill in the air. As he jogged toward the nearest Tube station, Colin felt exhilarated, free for the first time in months. He checked that his wand was in his pocket as he ran through the plan in his mind. He would travel to the next stop and then Apparate from the nearest alley. He took a steadying breath.
He was ready.
