What a difference. A day ago he’d been in dry clothes with a full stomach, lost and miserable as he’d wandered around, trying to find them, knowing they were hidden. Now he stood in soaking clothes, stiffly clinging to his skin in the frigid air, his stomach rumbling, hollow with hunger - and Ron was thrilled. Alive. With them.

With her.

It was the same feeling he got flying his Cleansweep, wind roaring through his ears. He realized he’d probably never fly his broomstick, any broomstick again, but even that didn’t bother him. He’d done it. He could remember it. The dark despair choking him these last weeks was gone and everything - even her fury - felt brilliant.

Looking over to the bunk, he saw her lying there, her back facing him, close enough that, had he an inclination to suicide, he could reach out and touch her as she lay there, safely hating him.

“Ron?” Harry held out something like that could’ve been a vegetable once.

“Oh, yeah. Dinner.” Ron snatched the smallest piece, leaving the bulk for Harry and Hermione since he’d spent the last few weeks eating Fleur’s cooking. Oddly though, he’d never felt like eating the whole time he’d been at Bill’s. Food and warmth had only served to remind him of what they were doing without. Now, he happily chomped on his …whatever it was. He glanced up again, knowing if he was the one to offer anything to Hermione right now, she’d turn it down. So, he let Harry do it.

“Hermione?”

“What?” she snapped, and Harry held his hand out.

Reluctantly, she thanked him and turned back towards the wall. Harry turned back to Ron and shrugged, but Ron couldn’t stop the smile that blossomed across his face. Harry snorted and headed back outside.

“Cheers,” Ron called after his best mate, barely containing his excitement. Silently, he thanked Dumbledore again. She could hate him for a while. He could live with that. And they would do this thing. And then… Ron cleared his throat and grabbed the nearest thing, a book, and placed it over his lap, fighting to contain a very different excitement.
