This is crazy. Sean's done quite a few mad, impulsive things in his life, but this... well, maybe it isn't quite the craziest, but it's definitely up there. Still, it has to be telling that, amidst the slight creeping panic that he's steadfastly pushing on through, he hasn't yet felt a shred of doubt about this being exactly the right thing to do ( Read more... )

I've gone from being on more teams than is probably sane to being on effectively none. I spend my time hunting boar when I used to hunt superpowered @$$holes bent on taking over the world or just blowing it up.

No, I'm not busy.

I hoist the axe back on to my shoulder. I don't really need to be chopping wood, but sometimes it just feels good to swing a blade into something.

"Depends," I say. "Why do you want to know?"

Sean pauses for a second before replying, something about doing so feeling strangely like a big deal. As if letting someone else in on this, expanding it beyond just himself and Meredith, is all that it takes to make it no longer just a mad whim, but something that's actually going to happen. The moment passes quickly enough, though, and his concerns about how best to ask fall easily aside in favour of his defaulting to the direct route.

"Gettin' married, need a best man. Ye in?"

He doesn't beat around the bush. I appreciate that.

Now, my experiences of marriage haven't ended particularly well. Hell, I can't think of many people I know that have managed it. I might've said Parker, if we were back home, but look how that's gone.

For all that, I'm not going to be disparaging. If Sean wants to try for the happy ending, good for him. And if that makes me a sap, well, that's why I'm not saying much of that out loud.

"Yeah, all right," I say. "How long've I got to throw the bachelor party?"

Sean can't help but grin, oddly relieved even though it isn't as if he had a whole lot riding on this. That's one task down, the rest shouldn't be more than a waiting game.

And not much of one, at that.

"Ehm... jus' under an hour? Less some time ta get changed, we should prob'ly get on that."
