Chapter 4 - A Good Gentleman’s Desire Part 1

Bai Zi Hua had not taken any action yet that even Sha Qian Mo was worried for him. In his first lesson, Bai Zi Hua sat at the front of the class and did not say a word, he just stayed still the entire time. The students kept waiting for him to say something and gradually became anxious so they tried asking him questions but was met with no response. The students were scared to even make small talk because he was looking at them, so eventually they were left to look at each other until they all succumbed to sleep. Hua Qian Gu was no exception and she even snored publicly.

Thereafter, if they weren’t outside to paint then it is sitting silently in the fields. The students began to ditch Bai Zi Hua’s class, even You Ruo could not stand it anymore and left to join the animal farming class. At the end, only around 7 or 8 students were left attending.

On the other hand, Hua Qian Gu was determined to continue because she was able to sleep in his class without suffering any consequences.

Compared to the other teachers in school who seemed generous, Bai Zi Hua seemed very at ease. Hua Qian Gu also noticed that other people showed great respect for him too. As long as Bai Zi Hua was present then everyone would tone down their actions.

He seldom speaks and his face showed no particular emotions either. His presence was like the wind and the clouds, making others surrounding him feel assured. Hua Qian Gu could fall asleep just looking at him.

….

It was Bai Zi Hua’s lesson again and this time he took everyone out to the lake for fishing.

The sky was blue and there was a cool breeze. They sat under a willow tree and waited for the fishes to take bait. The thought of eating fish tonight made Hua Qian Gu very happy but she had been waiting for a long time and still no fish was caught.

Some students stuck their fishing rod on the ground and some used a rock to stable it as they ran off to the side to fly kites or catch butterflies as they waited. Only Bai Zi Hua’s reflection in the lake remained, his image was similar to a picturesque cloud floating beside the mountains and the waterfalls.

Hua Qian Gu stared at Bai Zi Hua mindlessly and then ran over and sat beside him. She put her fishing rod down and secretly took a peek. She realised that her memory was getting worse each day. She could recognise a lot of people after first meeting them but she could not remember Bai Zi Hua’s face. Like now, even though she could clearly see Bai Zi Hua in front of her but it feels like a fog was covering her eyes and making her unable to remember. Why is it like this, she wondered as she picked a blade of grass and placing it in her mouth.

“Teacher, you also didn’t catch any fish?” Hua Qian Gu could see his basket was empty.

Bai Zi Hua did not respond so Hua Qian Gu quickly followed up with an answer: “Maybe all the fishes are sleeping in their houses.”

“Teacher, what kind of fish do you like to eat? I like to eat the ones that doesn’t have a lot of bones in it. There was one time where I accidentally choked on a fish bone. I tried everything to spit it out including drinking a lot of vinegar. I even made father worry a lot about me. Can you guess what happened next?”

Bai Zi Hua continued to ignore her.

“I fell over by the door and the bone flew right out! Ha ha ha…” Her laughter slowly died down, Hua Qian Gu embarrassingly wiped her nose.

“Teacher, if you caught a fish then can you give me one? I’ll bring it home to make fish soup and bring it for you tomorrow, okay?”

“Right, how about I add in some beef as well?”

“Haizz, teacher, how come you don’t say anything? Are you afraid that you would make the fishes swim away? How about we lower our voices then?”

Hua Qian Gu was bored to death, she felt like she was talking to a rock. Suddenly she spotted a dragonfly flying towards them and landed on Bai Zi Hua’s fishing rod.

“Look, a dragonfly!” She excitedly jumped up and reached out to it. The dragonfly flew high above in a circle and then landed back. This time Hua Qian Gu guessed the right timing and reached over again but the dragonfly confidently flew out of her grasps. Hua Qian Gu’s chubby body lost balance and she headed straight down into the lake.

She screamed in fear. Her face was just touching the water when she felt someone tugging at her waistband and pulling her back up. Hua Qian Gu landed on the grass and when it was all over, she continuously said thank you to her teacher.

Pulling up her sleeves to wash away the grass and mud on her hands, Bai Zi Hua saw the 4 words ‘I Love A Fool’ on her arm and immediately the black ink trickled downwards. Dong Fang Yu Qing, you’re quite something, how dare you call me a fool! But his Xiao Gu was no better as she couldn’t defend from Dong Fang’s trick beforehand.

“Do you always want to eat?”

“What? Yes?” Hua Qian Gu thought that she could hear teacher speaking to her.

Bai Zi Hua looked at her from head to toe.

Hua Qian Gu quickly shook her head to explain: “No! I only crave eating, I can eat from morning to night. I may be chubby but I’m quite flexible and versatile.” Hua Qian Gu tried to stand up and spin on one leg to prove it but felt herself falling in the lake again so she changed to spinning on both legs.

Seeing Bai Zi Hua still looking at her, she could not understand why that for the first time he made her feel like she had done something wrong. Embarrassed, she looked down and gripped her dress.

She knows that behind her back people do not call her Hua Qian Gu but they called her Hua Qian Ball* instead. Besides, it was not her intention to be this chubby, *cries* how come everyone hates her?

*Ball = meaning that she looks chubby like a ball

“Come here.” Bai Zi Hua suddenly said.

“What? Yes?”

Hua Qian Gu trudged towards Bai Zi Hua. She stupidly looked at him when suddenly she felt a hand smacking hard on her back. She choked and coughed, a tiny jade pearl flew out of her mouth.

“What?” Could she have coughed up her whole stomach contents? All of a sudden, she could feel her whole body being relieved of something and so even though she was frightened, she did not say anything.

Bai Zi Hua still wore that same forever unchanging expression and went back to focusing on fishing by the lake. Hua Qian Gu swallowed her words and wanted to ask what just happened. Being chubby is not a crime, she thought, why did he hit her?

She continued to sit next to him and waited for the fishes to take bait. The sounds of crickets filled the atmosphere around them, birds were singing and the calm surface of the water reflected the sunlight making her tired. Unconsciously, she leaned on Bai Zi Hua’s body and slept snoring. Bai Zi Hua sat like a statue and did not make any movements.

Not far from them was Liu Huo who was sleeping by the tree. Opening his eyes, he could see one tall person and one short person leaning on each other by the lake. It was a beautiful and calm scene to have witnessed. Smirking, he closed his eyes and returned to sleep.

In the end, Hua Qian Gu slept the entire afternoon. It was time to head back to school and still Bai Zi Hua did not catch any fish.

“It is because you snored too loudly.” Bai Zi Hua calmly said. Hua Qian Gu pitifully scrunched her face in disappointment after hearing that.

Yet the strangest thing was from that point on her cravings suddenly stopped. She ate 3 times a day and did not feel hungry at all. Gone was the feeling like she had to eat till her stomach blew up and she stopped nibbling on other foods as well. However, she still did not like to move around so her fat did not reduce. Sheng Xiao Mo then forbid her to use the sedan chair and forced her to walk to school every morning for an hour.
