Wow, I just found out that Antioch College in Yellow Springs is closing next year.

I didn't attend Antioch (way too rich for my blood) but I had friends who graduated from the university, and I went to plenty of shows there. It was the first place I ever saw Camper Van Beethoven, and I caught the Dead Kennedys there twice (on consecutive nights).

Antioch isn't dead, but it is on life support with Kevorkian lingering next to the plug. Sadly, the trend in higher ed right now is to make money, make more money and, then, figure out ways to make some more. Universities have become who can spend the most money on flash and style to satisfy the "plugged in" student while the actual academics are starting to become marginalized. Unfortunately, places like Antioch and true liberal arts colleges are going to be killed off, I think.

The same thing is happening here at Xavier. We'll spend in the neighborhood of 200 million just so that we can put a feather in our cap saying that we were the first university in the nation to pull off this type of learning commons/reorganization. Everything is moving fast, fast, fast, but the wheels are coming off and morale is very low.

This is the first we've heard of this. Not good since Mark goes to Antioch and is looking into getting his Principles Certification through there.

Our academics are suffering here at NKU, but we're getting a new arena and student center!!
