Nikon is taking a nose dive. Local newspapers around here have all changed to Canon. And a good friend of mine has been a photographer for 25+ yrs and has a Carmens Foto Source store... always recommends a Canon for an SLR.
I on the other hand, have amazed him continuously from the photos I've taken with my non-SLR camera. I have a Panasonic Lumix FZ-8. I'm getting SLR quality pictures (ppl also think its been taken with an SLR) for a camera tha cost less than $300.
If you want SLR quality with a point-n-shoot price... I seriously suggest looking at the Panasonic Lumix line.
I have an Olympus point and shoot deal. It's okay, but I wouldn't rec it for serious photographers. I want to get something a little bit better for taking better photos.
Since you asked about DSLR, I'd recommend Canon, I have a Digital Rebel XTi and love it. That's what I took all of our San Francisco pictures with.
Unfortunately my point and shoot Canon PowerShot S2 IS died only after 1 1/2 years and they won't fix it for free even though it died of a known issue.
