fic writer meme

I really should be writing right now.... dsklhdfsklfh

Brief Intro
man, I hate these things. I'm a british nineteen year old lit student, I read too many books and buy even more, I have a weakness for anything in the sci fi and fantasy genre, and star wars is my life. I get sucked into new television obsessions far too often. my favourite drinks are pineapple and coconut juice, mochas, and vodka lemonades. actually studying is something I'm, ah, working on.

What fandoms have you written in?
super junior, good omens, supernatural, the avengers (movie 'verse), teen wolf (unpublished as of yet), doctor who. what tends to happen is that I have far too many ideas and trailings of a plot, most of which I write down, and a large amount sit around on my hard drive unfinished. it's a problem.

Do the number of reviews tell how good a story is? Do reviews affect how you write in any way?
absolutely not - generally the amount of comments/reviews/kudos a fic recieves is usually determined by its, or the authors, popularity. a lot of the time very popular fic authors are also very good ones, but not always. I generally find a constructive response to my fic, rather than "squee otp" are more helpful in terms of improving writing, but of course any kind of feedback is greatly appreciated because, yey, love.

Do you use a beta?
technically, no - which is a problem, because I always miss things and end up kicking myself later. I would say that casrousel is my writing partner somewhat, since almost all of my fic ideas thus far have come from conversations we've had, and we'll often end up plotting (okay that's a loose word for it) them together.

What warnings have you used on your fiction?
usually my only rated warnings are for porn and/or angst, but I suspect in the future there might be more trigger-y subjects involved (possible gore, character death, etc).

Have you ever stolen something from another person's work?
dear lord, no. I often get inspired by fanfiction as much as I do by published literature and media, but the furthest I will ever go is quoting with references. I would never plagiarise.

Favorite fandom to write/read?
the avengers is a lot of fun, but since my knowledge only encapsulates the film canon and odd titbits of information about the comics gleaned from wikipedia, it can be hard to know what to write. I would say that supernatural is probably the easiest for me, since I know the characters so well, but good omens and teen wolf are not only fun, but have such a huge possibility for scope and depth that you can do almost anything with them. that's definitely a creative boner for me.

Favorite pairing?
oh, man. I have a /lot/ of otps, so I'll go with my favourite pairing right now, which is jess/becker from the itv show primeval. that programme has been my guilty pleasure for years - dinosaurs wandering around london, how is that not the best - and I live for the witty dialogue, the plot twists and two of my favourite het ships in the universe. I'm actually in the middle of writing a giant jess-centric meta (there needs to be more jess love, I am holding out for a sixth season, come on itv don't leave me hanging), though the state of the fic for this pairing in the fandom leaves much to be desired.

Do you tend to write the same pairings/characters?
pretty much, but since I'm discovering new characters and otps all the time, I wouldn't say there's a lack of variation.

Favorite writer/writers?
this question, are you really asking me this. right now I'd probably go with neil gaiman, john green,  frances hodgson burnett, john le carre, and markus zusak.

What is your most popular fanfic and why do you think people find it so?
I'm having to go by number of comments, since lj doesn't have a views function, but it's definitely one of my old sj fics. it's probably a tie between every weekend (which is explainable because, qmi), and the loneliest kissing booth, which is more of a surprise, since henry/siwon is an extremely rarepair that hasn't really seen the light of mainstream fandom since the super girl days. people seemed to like it, though.

Forget most people, what's the fanfic you've written you're most proud of?
probably the abandoned fic involving aziraphale and castiel. I posted a little drabble torn from it because I just couldn't get it off the ground, but I hope to come back to it some day - it doesn't look like much, but the depth of the emotion that I actually wrote into the fic will always be dear to my heart. it's one of those spn/good omens crossovers, and it involved a universe-transcending gabriel to tie it precariously together. I mainly wrote it to play with the different definitions of angels in these two universes, about infinite possibilities, and healing.

Do you find writing easy? Hard? What are the most difficult aspects of writing you struggle with?
it's a mixture - coming up with ideas and plotlines is almost a natural process for me, I do it almost unconsciously. motivating myself to sit down and start writing is an entirely different matter, but once I do it normally flows somewhat effortlessly. the worst is when I read it back afterwards and have to change it - that takes days and a constant need for fresh eyes.

Pairings you avoid?
I just don't write the ones I don't like, though that's pretty standard.

Are there any fanfiction trends/cliches you can't stand or are just sick of?
it's more about turn of phrase, if I'm honest. I hate seeing the same words and phrases used in the same situations in all fics - there are so many scene when you could take out the character's names and be unable to pinpoint which show/book the fanfiction was about, let alone the characters, because it would be exactly the same as several other million fics out there.

Are you guilty of any of the fanfiction trends/cliches you now hate? Or any other ones?
I find myself doing it occasionally, but I'm usually vicious in editing so I hope I manage to quash most of it.

When you write, is there anything that helps? Music? Quiet room?
it tends to depend on where I'm writing - if I've specifically locked myself away, I'll want absolute quiet.I usually don't even listen to music, and even then it has to be instrumental only otherwise my concentration breaks. but other times I like to write when I'm out, whether in the library or a coffee shop, or the study room, in which case I revel in the noise and bury myself in it. I'm a creature of situation.

Lastly, how would you sum up your fanfiction experience and yourself as a writer?
I've loved fanfiction for a long time, and I suspect that it's an affair that will last for a great deal longer. my reasons for such are meta-material for another time, but generally I would say it does enrich my experience as a writer. it's a hobby that has multiple payoffs, in that you get to enjoy it and other people get to enjoy it, without any third party involvement or obligations. that's what I like about it - people writing for fun, with no expectations, and consequently people reading for fun. how can that be construed as a bad thing?

somewhat self reccing, fanfic meme, actually procrastination
