All Unwritten Prompt #6: Rot Kissed Bananas

Jun 27, 2010 22:13

They weren't all that great.

They weren't fresh, they didn't smell all that tempting either. Just looking at them now, all bruised and spotted with brown on his wobbly table made him wrinkle his nose in distaste.

Why did he even buy those rotten bananas? Ah, that's right. ANBU-chan had recommended he eat more fruits if he ever wanted to grow up and become a strong ninja. ANBU-chan was the only adult that talked to him. He imagined that ANBU-chan would be happy that he listened to him.

Cerulean eyes peered at the bananas. By tomorrow, he'll have to throw them out. He'll have to eat them now if he didn't want to waste his money. Small hands fumbled with ripping out one banana. He used too much strength and it burst. Sticky, disgusting, brown. Nonplussed, after all, he had worse things thrown at him in the past, he smeared the slush onto his table. He makes a mental note to clean up the mess later.

He tries again, and this time, the banana didn't burst, but it felt lumpier than the first one. The blond poked at the fruit experimentally and with as much severity an eight year old can muster, wondered if he should go ahead and open it anyways. He didn't.

Naruto sighed. He had spent a lot on those bananas. He was too young to know how to pick good fruits, and even if he had, those mean shop owners would not have let him buy it. Even if they were rotten, he was vastly overcharged. Even he knew that. But ANBU-chan had insisted that ramen wasn't all he should eat! Two of them were rotten and inedible, he had four more to try.

The third was even worse than its predecessors and ended up splattered all over the table and the front of his shirt. The fourth was alright. Naruto managed to salvage half of it before spitting out the other half when he tried to stomach that too. Gagging slightly at the smell and blinking back tears of frustration, Naruto left the other two bananas. By the looks of it, they weren't edible either.

Why did he even bother trying? He had been just fine with just ramen as his primary staple. Now he didn't even have enough money for a bowl at Ichiraku's. As if to attest to his state of hunger, his stomach rumbled pitifully. The tears finally fell.

Kakashi, or ANBU-chan, found Naruto curled up in his bed an hour later. The ANBU before him left without another word, no doubt relieved to be free from the demon child's presence. With a basket of fruit in one hand, Kakashi regarded his ward with cool eyes. He had taken in the mess at the kitchen table and was able to infer the rest. With a weary sigh, Kakashi shook Naruto awake gently. "Naruto-chan," He smiled behind his mask and lifted his up his gift, "Would you like a banana?"

Naruto smiled weakly.
