In which I get my townie dander up

I cannot for the life of me figure out why this article, ostensibly about what the Obamas can expect on Martha's Vineyard is one of the Globe's most emailed articles.

First of all, the Obamas aren't even officially going to MV. Their spokespeople have denied it, and my parents haven't mentioned the Secret Service booking up the hotels ( Read more... )

I hate it when people trying to act superior (or even just fit in) start to name drop with stuff like this especially about places like the Hamptons, Nantucket, or MV. This article makes me wonder if she has ever been to the Vineyard.

I go to Nantucket quite a bit to visit my old roommate, and one thing I have learned is not to act like you know everything. There is stuff I do know (like the curried chicken salad at Barlett's is super tasty), but more often than not, I don't offer my opinion about things there. To be quite honest, while I have been heading out to Nantucket for the last 15 years, I still couldn't tell you how to get to my friend's house from downtown (I spend most of the time in the car playing with the radio (96.3 the Rose, baby).)

Oh my god, can I just tell you, they changed their format? I nearly had a heart attack the last time I was on MV when I clicked and it wasn't the same five pop songs over and over again! It's frickin' WEEI now!

It's a terrible piece, but I think the illustration is cute.

I imagine it's on the most-emailed list because it's being linked to by right-wing websites.

You have to have obsidian-solid credentials if you try to pull off a piece like this and even then, you run a high risk of sounding like a total snot-box. I'm a Nantucketer, not a Vineyarder, but I get the general drift and it sounds like she just missed the mark by a mile.

On a personal note, I was sad to hear recently that Thomson's Clam Bar in Harwich had closed--not because I'd ever been there but because during my long-ago work days on Nantucket we'd hear that jingle over and over again on 'MVY. I can still sing the whole thing.
