I am writing a letter to the district concerning the dress code...
To Whom It May Concern:
Living in a society of scandals and hypocrisy, today’s adolescents have witnessed many more terrible things than previous generations. All one needs to do is turn on the T.V. or walk down the street, and they will see many people showing more skin than the eye cares to see. The Grossmont High School District was impelled to force a new dress code on students for the 2004-2005 school in order to help the students succeed. There has been much talk of changing the dress code for the 2005-2006 school year to include any clothing that shows skin. If the district is so concerned about the learning environment, why not go to uniforms? Uniforms eliminate the hassle of a dress code, allow students to save time in the morning, and save money all around.
Changing the dress code each year not only confuses the students, but makes the students resent the school. Along with new policies in dress code, the curriculum gets more and more difficult each year. Why add more stress to students who are being constantly pushed, and are ready to break? By putting a new dress code into effect each year, it is only encouraging students to try and break the dress code, because they see it as getting more and more ridiculous. By just walking off campus, one will see all the evils that the new dress codes are trying to eliminate. It is one thing to ban gang signs and derogatory messages, but creating a dress code which only includes T-shirts and jeans is quite another. This goes beyond being a dress code, and becomes insanity. The clothes that are being offered in the stores today do not include the “appropriate” items, and students should not be forced to search out these items. By going to uniforms, the school will no longer have to search out students who are inappropriately dressed, and will save the students time taken out of class to change. Every student will wear the same outfit, so the need for a dress code will become obsolete, so the district can focus their attention on more important items, such as the curriculum. Clearly, by going to uniforms, the hassle of a dress code will be eliminated.
Each morning, hundreds of students across the district are tardy to their classes. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to wake up in the morning and not have to worry about picking an outfit out? Certainly a uniform will save at least five minutes from every student’s morning rush to school. This will not only benefit the office who has to keep track of each tardy, but will stop many interruptions in the morning classes, and will help the students not miss any important information in class. This, inevitably, will lead to better test scores, and grades. The main priority of a teacher will be teaching again, and they will not have to stop in the middle of their lesson to mark a student late. Students will no longer have to worry about what looks good with what, because the items are pre chosen, and each item corresponds with the others. What a relief to not have to search for items in one’s closet that not only fit’s the dress code, but looks good together. Many student’s mornings will begin much more smoothly if they do not have the stress of finding an outfit, and students do not need any extra stress in today’s world. Uniforms will clearly allow students to save time in their morning routine, which will lead to a better high school experience all around.
Each day students are bombarded with brands that they should be wearing, and these brands only get more and more expensive. Where does all this money come from? What about the students who don’t have a lot of money? Students, and parents, do not need the stress of buying all the expensive clothing. With uniforms, everyone will be uniform and equal. No longer will students look at each other first at what they are wearing, but first at their personalities. Some might argue that uniforms take away from one’s individuality, but clearly one can still be an individual while wearing a uniform when it comes to accessories. Also, clothing does not dictate who a person is, so wearing a uniform will only enhance who they are, by allowing people to focus on people, not outfits. The thousands of dollars spent on trendy clothing could go to much better causes. Students will no longer have to purchase a new wardrobe to fit the ever changing dress code, but can sigh their sighs of relief when they can simply order the clothing online and spend their time studying, or just enjoying their time off from school. Uniforms do not take away from the individual, but allow the individual to come out, while saving thousands of dollars and taking away stress from students each year.
Once one looks past the myths that lye behind uniforms, they will see that uniforms are actually a very good thing for today’s student. Not only do they save time in the morning routine, but they will also eliminate a dress code and save money. The last thing students need to worry about is a wardrobe, and by taking this out of the picture, students will be able to focus on school, and enjoying it once again. Clearly, uniforms are a much better investment than a new dress code each school year. Being a student myself, I would hope that you do consider these facts, and instead of designing a new dress code, implement uniforms.
