I blogged about this at length on my other blog, however I wanted to chronicle it here as well ( Read more... )

Wait... they suggested *Valtrex* for having the antibodies for HSV-1? Are they getting kickbacks for that medication or something? I could see if you were experiencing constant bad breakouts or something (which is really only likely if you have a majorly compromised immune system), but simply for showing the antibodies? HSV-1 is extremely common, and it rarely manifests as anything worse than the occasional cold sore.

I'm sorry, but it kind of blows my mind that they would treat this as any kind of a big deal.

I agree! It is either that, or it is the well trained mind in Western Medicine hard at work (they wish to turn us into a nation of pill poppers). Since I told them that I am not sexually active, they basically said, "Oh ok then. But if you do get intimate with a partner...you probably want to go on it." Nevermind the fact that no one is even sure where in my body these little virus particles may be hanging out!

{Sigh}

Yes I agree. But that is doctors for you.

I think they were focusing on the fact that Valtrex can also lower your risk of giving it to someone else. But I see two things wrong with that:

1) There is a good chance the other person already has been exposed to HSV-1
2) What are my real chances of passing it along if I don't have outbreaks?

Maybe I am being naive...but I feel the chances of the worst case scenario do not justify me popping expensive pills daily. No way. Heck, I can't even bring myself to take birth control because it is my money being spent on...(again, what are the chances really)? Yeah.
