So after like a million years, I finally get to a place where I think I can start work on coding that Fallout KiSS doll that I've been working on since 2008

I wish I could help! I've been using an ass-backward method since I got started. It's a combination of MSPaint, Paint Shop Pro, and DOS gif2cel. I've recently had to learn to use Windows gif2cel because I upgraded my system and couldn't use DOS anymore.
Heh heh, that's pretty much exactly what I'm using, except I used WSVC to break up the image sheet. Now, I am totally OK with making individual .gifs that all use the same palette (thanks to PSP's palette options) but how to make Gif2Cel recognize the background as transparent? That seems to be my only issue.
Okay, I can't guarantee that this is the right way, but here's what I do:
I edit the palette to the main gif (I like to use the basedoll, but it's not critical). Pretty much, just change the first palette entry to the color you want as transparent, and then put the original color in the place where you got the now-transparent one. Then you'll have to save the .pal and apply (load) it to the other images. That's going to be a big headache if you've already saved the images as separate, but it's the only thing I know.
I hope that helps. I kind of doubt that it will, but it's all I know.
