Not gonna lie... I'm a bit jealous. While the industry seems to be booming everywhere else... it feels like a slowly sinking ship here in Hollywood land. First it was blamed on the SAG strike, then the economy. But I honestly think it's just that things are becoming less and less centralized... and have an unpleasant feeling that things here will never be what they once were. I hope I'm wrong.

To be honest we are doing well over here at the moment as the pound is worth much less than the Euro (and possibly dollar). A lot of films that would have gone to Eastern Europe in previous years are finding our studios cheaper. I think the next big one starting is "John Carter of Mars" which I'm led to believe is being prepped largly in the states and then filmed here. It is a drastically changing industry, that is for sure. I'm just riding a wave at the moment, but who knows in a few years/months especially when Potter comes to an end after 7 years of employing half the industry.

Anyway aren't you on Predator?

Nope... opted to stay at Creature Effects. Half of me is still kicking myself because I'm a nerd and desperately wanted to work on a silly Predator film, but it would have meant seaming every day with some really unpleasant personalities, vs. where I am, where I get to do a bit of everything, and go to set on occasion and such. Although our current job is wrapping up and there isn't much on the horizon, so who knows. But hell, Predators is wrappin up soon too. That's the thing.. it's an ugly cycle here. Shops are desperate to get jobs in, so they underbid. And on top of that, productions don't want to pay for alot of build time. So, what you keep getting are these builds that have to happen at a break-neck pace and at lower rates.

But yeah... who knows what the future holds. It's just a wee bit unnerving when you call shops and the receptionists sound worried.. and when you see old timers coming into shops looking sad and worn and working for half their rates.

That is exactly the same over here so don't be too jealous. Work times are getting shorter and shorter and pay fluctuates beyond belief. To be honest it sounds like you did the right thing staying at the smaller shop. Part of the reason I've not worked on Potter before is that I was worried it would be very repetative, very pigeonholing and massive multiples of things. Fine for a few months, but the smaller jobs tend to be more challenging!

Saying that I am looking forward to my stint on Potter now. It;s the last one and it seems all my friends are there.
