*nods* I pretty much agree with every word. Unfortunately I'm not really enjoying Dance so far and Jon's one of the better points IMO...

UGH, why must we all crave to be Jon Snow :| I do NOT want to want to be Jon Snow. Jon Snow why must you exist!

I'm not far into Dance, I'm liking it okay so far but TBH I'm expecting more of a glorified status report out of this book than anything else ...

To be honest, I don't care for Jon AND Dany for similar reasons...and together they make up a big chunk of ADWD. Heh. No wonder it's been slow reading for me... The point about gender is so true though. I've seen Dany called a Mary Sue (uuugh hate that term) for reasons that would apply to Jon too. I mean a lot of it just comes from being The Hero because there are a lot of similarities between Jon and Harry Potter (or maybe I just think that because I just home from seeing DH2) in that a lot of times things just ~happen to them and they have greatness thrust upon them blah blah blah. It's just not a character trope that I particularly love.

Jon is soooo HP in my mind!! There should not be Harry Potters in ASOIAF.

Yes I agree that there are some aspects of Jon and Dany that are similar and that's why plenty enough of the people who dislike one dislike the other. But no matter what else, Dany does not have greatness thrust upon her apart from her divine birthright (and given R+L=J Jon has that looming over his head to validate his awesomeness too, and in a way that is evades/is less open to criticism of the follies of divine right). Dany makes tough choices and does shit and burns men and sacks cities and whatever else, she is in the captain's chair whereas with Jon it's like four books of basically dancing around the "fact" that Jon deserves the captain's chair. BUT FOR WHAT RAISIN ( ... )

Oh this title and post make me smile!! Agree so hard.

Even though so far in Dance (up to Jon III) I've found Jon less terrible than usual because he's actually had to make some decisions and do actual things (vaaaaaaague). But yeah, you can already tell he's being developed to become "darker" but also MORE AWESOME, which is super annoying. He's done NOTHING to show he's much more than competent, but he has such special snowflake vibe, and ughhh. I think you said this in a comment before and I totally agree, it is like he is playing by some different rules of a different book series.

And even though I don't think fandom has influenced my Jon hate (I wrote about not liking him in my lj before ever setting a foot in fandom) one of the things that drives me crazzzzzy is fandom's reaction to him compared to Dany. They're at least equally unbelievably in that magical teen protagonist way, but Dany gets called Mary Sue and Jon is idolized. SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT. I WONDER WHAT MIGHT CAUSE THIS DISTINCTION ( ... )

Yes and yes. I don't THINK it's fandom, because I had these feelings before I ever got into fandom, but fandom sure does make it harder to forget the things that bug me about Jon since those are the things fandom loves about Jon XD

I want Jon's darker actions to actually COUNT. It's a good step in the right direction that he actually has darker actions now, but if they're all going to be whitewashed away with "badasses gotta do what badasses gotta do" then AUGH GEORGE RR MARTIN YOU DO HATE ME AFTER ALL DON'T YOU.

SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT. I WONDER WHAT MIGHT CAUSE THIS DISTINCTION?? HRMM LET US PONDER XD ( ... )

I'm no particular Jon fan, as most people know, and i agree with much of it. Won't say more because LJ ATE MY LONGER REPLY AND A DRAGON DOES NOT RETYPE *sigh*

I was just talking to stoopid_silly the other day - I am not a fan of Jon currently. I liked him at first, he was one of my favourite characters (because I always go for sad, emo and unhappy in any gender), but after GoT and Kit Herrington who seem to have brought the whole "I AM SO EMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" right to the surface (I don't think he is any good at acting, so this is the only thing he can do - pout), and without many Ghost scenes I realised that it was Ghost that I liked, not Jon. :D

So yes, I do see what you mean about Jon, and yes

But I don't particular like Arya's storyline neither. I like her as a character, but she is turning into some kind of child soldier.

See, Kit makes me like Jon more because for me he lends Jon a down-to-earth goofiness and dorkiness that makes him less perfect, but yeah I've seen a number of my friends say that he turned them off to Jon instead. I dunno what'll happen in the future seasons though, probably Kit being visibly older than Jon might take the edge off some of my eye-rolling.

I like Arya's storyline a whole lot, because she's turning into a child soldier. I find it so compelling and real and raw, instead of romanticizing her as a tomboy it looks at some very realistic and unique ramifications. I can't wait to get to her chapters, but as they say, different strokes for different folks!

Oh, this is a good point, I hear! I guess she just always been such a favourite in the fandom that although I like her, I don't get that outsider/dark horse vibe I usually go for in my BIG favourites..
