If it's not one thing...

My Dad came off his bike whilst cycling to hospital to have his thyroid checked. He has a 10min gap in his memory so has no idea how he came off his bike - he was on a cycle path so at least we know there wasn't a car involved. The doctors think he had a heart attack because he is overweight. I think that's unlikely as his blood pressure has always ( Read more... )

Haev you met my Dad? Can't remember. Think you'd get on though. My Dad is not just awesome but actually defines it :p

Your dad does seem quite awesome, just like mine. XD I'm sorry to hear he had the accident though. I hope you can figure out what happened.

=D Awesome dad's are awesome

I'm sure he'll be fine, whatever caused it. He's a bit grumpy at being kept in, but will hopefully be going back to painting until it's healed, so at least he won't be at a loose end because that would be bad for him.

My Dad was in hospital for a week or so last year as they though he had a heart attack. It turned out his heart had been misfiring for years and this 'smokers cough' he had was what had been restarting his heart. He has a pacemaker now. I think it is terrifying when ANYTHING medical happens to your parents as it makes you realise they aren't immortal. Parents always seem indistructible ya know?

I hope your Dad gets better soon though. I must really be frustrating for him to break his wrist as he works with his hands. Wish him well for me though.

Wow! That's quite incredible. Glad your Dad's heart's being looked after now, though.

I'm not actually too worried about my Dad. I guess even this ha shaken my faith that he's indestructible. Even if it turns out to be diabetes or a heart attack (or a stroke, as my own mind panicked), i have faith that the doctors and nurses will be able to help him look after himself so he'll stay happy and healthy.

Heart attacks and similar ilk leave evidence that can be detected by a combination of ECGs and blood tests. Diabetes is easily diagnosed from bloods. I suspect they'll be conducting some combination of tests to try and find the answer so that you don't have to go through this worry again.

I believe that's why they're keeping him in over the weekend - to poke him to find out what's wrong and to keep an eye on him too. Doesn't make him any happier about it, though. He's being more blokey about this than most things! :)

They took a bunch of bloods when he arrived, but for diabetes you need to fast for 12 hrs, right? I guess they'll do that after operating then :)
