One Decent Silence

Rain drops are falling like small streams all over Seoul today. Thunders sounded like an angry god, while most people will prefer to stay at their warm and cozy living room.

And there she is. Standing by herself in the middle of the park.

People around her are running to find a shelter, but for her, the rain is the shelter.

Because it sounds like a comforting humming. Because it hides her own drops that falling from her eyes.

If only she knew by then why he suddenly left her.

“I need to talk.”

“Wait, I can’t find the best dress yet. I have to browse now.”

“It can wait. What I want to tell you can’t.”

“But we only have six months to plan!”

“We don’t.”

“What....What do you mean?”

“I can’t go along with the plan anymore, Fany.”

“What?”

“I can’t marry you.”

“Why?”

She was devastated that day. She thought he was a decent man. She thought he was different.

Their courting was not sudden. It took years to get what they were. Ever since both of them applied to work on that law firm.

And as a young and beautiful paralegal, she had so many suitors.

Yet no one could touch her heart, except the foreign boy who could not speak korean properly but still hired by the firm because of his charisma.

It took three years for them to be there. And one minute to destroy all.

She never know why he did that. But he was gone the day after he broke their relationship. As if the earth swallowed him in it.

Vanished.

So she blamed herself. She kept questioning why he left her. Was it something she did? Was it something she said?

Until this afternoon, six months after their separation, the day that they should be together forever.

When an attorney comes to her house and bringing some papers that she needs to sign.

A paper of will. That she is the sole beneficiary of some assets and savings.

A will of a Nickhun Horvejkul who died last week because of lung cancer.

She was wrong. He was a decent man. He was different.

He loved her so much to let her know that he was dying.

Rain drops fell at her cheeks, lining together with her own tears. If only she knew then.
