Here's the "official" reason, followed quickly by the "reversban" (which was soon backed by the CIA because it was deemed a lesser threat than the not-so-popular "Taliban").

oh, it was the pictures of penises. it sure seems like penises and/or drugs have become automatic excuses for stepping around the principles of good government. while that page is inarguably visually offensive, it's hardly "pornography" by any reasonable definition of the word. maybe they should put a label on it warning away more sensitive (read: fucking stupid) readers so no children are permanently damaged by viewing a (fake) picture of Antonin Scalia's member. of course, that would just make teenagers want to read it more, thus maybe making them want to be more involved in government...

Considering all the "nudie" pictures held within medical textbooks at the O.S. library, the penis defense is a pretty flaccid argument (pun entirely intended). The "worst in 40 years"? Really? Did he ever read a Danielle Steele novel?

Hopefully the best thing to come out of this will be that more teenagers would want to read this book, which, ironically, would keep them from their usual pursuit: surfing for porn.
