I was just doodling character designs without planning on drawing the whole comic yet, but I liked the way she came out so much that I rushed through the whole thing.

The detail I'm happiest to have included is the more normal girl on the subway giving her a look like "Gimme a fucking break."

I like the sugar glider! He looks like he didn't ask to be implicated in any of this but stoically accepts that he has no other choice.

He's a quirky accessory who's been afforded no personality of his own, and he knows it, and it's messed with him a little.

I wanted to see you while you were on the west coast. Phooey.

Nice. A Manic Pixie Dream Girl/Anhedonic Sad-Sack shaggy-dog tale. I watched Harold and Maude for the umpteeth time a few weeks ago, and it occurred to me that it's one of the only truly uplifting examples of this archetype. I think it's partly because Maude has lived through so much genuine strife (and not of her own design) that she's earned the right to be resilient and eccentric. Also, Ruth Gordon is just so darned endearing in the movie. I actually have a bit of a crush on Maude myself.

I haven't seen Harold & Maude in years, I really should check it out again. The Onion named Annie Hall as the Manic Pixie Dream Girl genesis, but I don't really see that. Maybe her kooky wardrobe had something to do with it, although that's reportedly how Diane Keaton dressed in real life anyway.

I read that AV Club list, and I didn't get the Annie Hall thing either. At all.

You should revisit Harold & Maude. It's among my all-time favorites. I actually love it more now than I did when I was in my teens. I don't know if Wes Anderson ever cited Hal Ashby as an influence, but I wouldn't be surprised.

He cast Bud Cort in The Life Aquatic so I bet he's a fanatic.
