It seems that each day I regret my decision to give my formerly broken netbook to a dodgy man to fix just a little bit more. Because today I discovered that he decided that he was going to wipe the original hard drive of its data before he returned it to me

Unless he dbanned it, you should be able to get most everything off of it running some tools in CAINE. I recommend starting with testdisk and photorec. Here are some fourms you can read through and then ask for help if you have trouble.

I've downloaded it and set photorec running on the old drive and already I can see files that I thought I'd never see again. THANK YOU SO MUCH! (Looks like it may be an hour or two longer before I see everything it can recover, but I'm now pretty hopeful.)
