I've got friends who studied Indonesian in school. Apparently it's really easy to pick up, and they really enjoyed it. Spanish is harder because things aren't spelled phonetically. Though I've never heard of anyone learning Russian. that does sound like fun. :)

Like things are spelled phonetically in English? :P

Yeah, Lara always tells me Indonesian is really easy. I know a tiny bit...

hey, i found in nepal and laos that world vision and various aid organisations in general tended to create more problems than solve. im not sure about other parts of the world of course, but i believe that peoples whos intentions are good get let down and wrapped up hopelessly in the beauracracy of 'world vision' or 'save the children'...etc - i believe now that if you want to do something, just to do it on your own.

good luck though, im sure your probably aware of this and are wiser than me in the 'scheme' of things.

ps. i just tried to go without food. i lasted a mere 4.5 days. how did you sustain your effort? did you try hoodia gordonii?

pps. spanish, because its a romance language and perhaps polar to japanese..

There are undoubtedly problems with World Vision and many (if not all) other BINGOs, but I'm not sure what you mean by "if you want to do something, just do it on your own" - especially what that something would entail. I am planning to do Australian Volunteers International (that was the main point of getting a piece of paper from a University saying that I can, in fact, write computer programs), but aside from that and supporting existing development organisations I'm not sure what other help I can offer to the majority world, short of moving there permanently and setting up my own organisation. This, of course, would be subject to the same perils as other NGOs encounter (red tape, not thoroughly understanding local problems before trying to solve them ( ... )

Yeah, pretty much. I'm not at all interested in post graduate study (at least, not of computer science), so I won't be back there unless I decide to become a lawyer or something, which wouldn't be happening for at least 5 years anyway.

Indonesian is easier (or so I've been told) but Spanish has more universal applications (south america and such). Russian would rule because its Russian but it would also mean learning a new alphabet and such which is probably not that bigger deal after Japanese but yeah.

And I've not seen you forever either, we should do stuff sometime
