I'd only see it if they did the traditional ending instead of the sell-out-to-get-young-teenage-girls-to-like-it ending.

stop being such a straight-acting-drama snob. Rent has substance, even if it was borrowed from Puccini. Just because there is singing and dancing and god forbid, a glimmer-of-hope ending is no reason to dismiss it.

the downfall is the whole purpose of a melodrama

Therefore, by making it less like La Boheme and more like Cinderella when they re-released it at the NYTWS, they diminished the reason it was written in the first place...to emulate the original opera.

Thats how my theatre professor explained it.
