CHARACTER NAME: Phoenix Wright
SERIES: Ace Attorney
RESERVED: Y
WISHLIST: N
PERSONALITY: Impulsive, headstrong, deeply curious, Phoenix could easily be an annoyance or worse if not for the fact that he means well at all times. He's very trusting to even those he doesn't know amazingly well. To those he considers friends, he's fiercely loyal- disregarding any danger or harm to himself in order to help them. Luckily for him, he generally comes out of anything relatively unscathed, and owes a fair deal to dumb luck. Phoenix also instinctually does whatever's right to help his friends, and it works out fine for him most of the time.
He can be moody and temperamental, especially when he feels he's been wronged (especially by a friend), and has a strong penchant for bitterness and pettiness. Phoenix can also be a bit obsessive about those he cares about, stopping just short of outright stalking those that are important to him when he feels they need him. He has a tendency to live in the past, basing his life off of events that happened years before.
He's a bit sarcastic at times, and has an almost painfully bad sense of humor (really, never trust him to write his own material). He's very intelligent when he puts his mind to it, but can be completely oblivious to things at times- especially with other people. Phoenix tends to consider himself the authority on his friends, even if he may not understand them or notice that something is wrong with them at all. He is, however, generally happy, and makes friends very easily. He's easily flustered at times, but is growing out of that (he still stutters when he's nervous or upset, however), and can bluff his way right to the truth if need be. He's a quick thinker, capable of puzzling out even convoluted cases (mostly while thinking aloud...he has that problem), and while most of his theories may be completely off-the-wall, he's usually right.
BACKGROUND: Though he was born in 1992, our knowledge of Phoenix in canon starts with a class trial when he was nine- Phoenix was wrongfully accused of stealing lunch money. The whole class was against him, until one boy- Miles Edgeworth - loudly objected to it, declaring that evidence was needed to prove that Phoenix was guilty. The class trial ended there, and a friendship began between the two and Phoenix's friend, Larry Butz. Following his father's death several months later, Miles moved away to Germany, and Phoenix wrote him letters from time to time.
Phoenix's next appearance is in college, and on trial for the murder of his current girlfriend's ex-boyfriend. As it turned out, his girlfriend (Dahlia Hawthorne, who he was madly in love with), was only using him to cover up the murder of defense attorney Diego Armando she had committed nearly eight months before, and when he wouldn't return evidence she had passed to him when they met for the first time (on the day of the murder), she tried to murder him herself by poisoning his cold medicine. When that still did not work, she framed him for murder. Dahlia was found out by Phoenix's attorney, Mia Fey, and was sentenced to death.
Following this, Phoenix devoted himself to the law, explaining that he had "a friend" that needed him (Miles Edgeworth, who had returned to LA and was making headlines as the infamous "Demon Prosecutor"). He next appeared in canon as a rookie attorney working under Mia Fey. She guided him through his first case (defending his other childhood friend, Larry Butz), but was murdered shortly afterward. Phoenix's second case had him defending her sister, Maya Fey, who was accused of the murder, and had him finally facing his childhood friend, Miles Edgeworth. Phoenix won the case, and went on to face Miles once again. Maya proved to be an invaluable assistant during this case and future ones- sometimes using her spirit-channeling abilities to call on Mia's aid, allowing her sister's spirit to effectively possess her body. Just after this, the prosecutor himself was framed for murder. Phoenix convinced Edgeworth to allow him to defend his case (against none other than Miles' mentor, Manfred Von Karma).
It was discovered through the course of the trial that Miles had believed himself to be his father's murderer, but in truth it was none other than his mentor, Von Karma. Von Karma took Miles under his wing fifteen years prior to corrupt and warp the Edgeworth name, following a slight to his perfect record from Miles' father, the erstwhile defense attorney Gregory Edgeworth. The bailiff, Yanni Yogi (who was puppeteered by Von Karma into framing Edgeworth for murder), was accused of Gregory Edgeworth's murder fifteen years prior. Mia and Maya's mother, a spirit-channeler named Misty Fey, was able to channel the soul of Gregory Edgeworth, who then pointed to blame in the direction of Yogi in an attempt to protect his son.
Following this case, Maya Fey left for her home, Kurain Village. Phoenix faced Miles one more time, and it was revealed that the prosecutor was deceived by the chief of police, Damon Gant, into presenting incomplete evidence. Following this, Miles "chose death" and left the country. Phoenix felt deeply betrayed by this, and demanded that Maya not even mention the name "Edgeworth" around him.
Phoenix's next big case was again defending Maya Fey against charges of murder, this time as an attempt by her aunt Morgan Fey to get rid of the main Fey family line and secure her own daughter's position as heir to the family. Her daughter (and thus, Maya's cousin), Pearl (nicknamed "Pearls" by Phoenix), assisted Phoenix during the case, and though young, proved to be a talented channeler herself. Phoenix faced Manfred Von Karma's youngest daughter, Franziska, and gave Franziska her first defeat. Maya was acquitted of all charges, Morgan was sent to prison, and life went back to "normal" for a short time (despite a brush with amnesia a few months later). During this case he obtained Maya's magatama, an artifact that allowed him to sense when people were lying and to break though their "psyche-locks" to uncover the truth.
Nearly a year later, Phoenix was strong-armed into defending the action star Matt Engarde as part of a ransom on Maya Fey. While preparing for the case, Edgeworth returned, and when Franziska was injured (shot in the shoulder by Maya's kidnapper, apparently), he stood in as prosecutor on the case. It became apparent through the course of the trial that Engarde was guilty of hiring an assassin (Shelly de Killer) to kill the victim, and that Maya was in de Killer's custody. De Killer was called on to testify via radio, and Phoenix used a video tape found in Engarde's home to show that Engarde didn't trust de Killer and recorded the hit (though the contents of the tape were never verified- it was a bluff). De Killer, incensed, promised to return Maya and stated that he had "found a new target". The case ended with Matt Engarde pleading to be sentenced (after all, in jail, de Killer can't get him), and a guilty verdict was delivered. Despite this case being Phoenix's first loss, he was happy that Maya was safe and that the truth was reached. He was chided by Franziska, who then stormed out but promised to return and exact "revenge" on him. Phoenix and Edgeworth made amends, and the prosecutor again left to study foreign judiciary systems abroad.
During the next year, Phoenix ran into the mysterious masked prosecutor known as "Godot", dealt with having a near-twin of himself defending cases for the mob (and using his name and a cardboard badge, no less), and then made a trip to Hazakura Temple with Maya and Pearl. Here he encountered the eerily familiar nun Iris (who very closely resembled Dahlia Hawthorne), traveling children's book illustrator Elise Deuxnim, and her pupil "Laurice Deuxnim" (Larry Butz). Maya set out for special training on the other side of the temple, and Pearl took a shine to Elise and was invited to her room to read books (but she never shows up). Phoenix and Iris talked shortly before lights-out, and she called him by name, despite him not introducing himself to her. He questioned her on it and she evaded answering.
There was a violent storm that night, and after hearing a scream, Phoenix rushed out of his room to discover that Elise had been murdered at the temple and the bridge leading to the side of the temple that Maya was on engulfed in flames. Phoenix, fearing that the murderer may have crossed the bridge, rushed across. The bridge gave out under his weight and sent him plummeting into the river below. He survived with no broken bones but was hospitalized with a high fever. Edgeworth showed up at the hospital the next morning (after a phone call from Larry, he feared the worst and chartered a jet to fly him in from another country), and Phoenix handed over his badge and magatama after a brief explanation of what happened. Phoenix asked him to defend Iris (who has been arrested for the murder), and Edgeworth reluctantly agreed.
Edgeworth was able for forestall a guilty verdict, and Phoenix returned to pick up the case two days later. He learned that prosecutor Godot had been nowhere to be found during the first day of trial, but appears later that day. Maya was discovered to be trapped, locked in a cave that was threatening to collapse at any moment. Shortly afterward, there was an earthquake, and Phoenix, knowing that Edgeworth has a deep phobia of earthquakes, and fearing that Maya may be crushed in a cave-in, rushed to help them. Both were well enough, though Edgeworth was deeply shaken. Phoenix then learned that Dahlia Hawthorne actually had a twin sister- his current client, Iris. He also learned that Elise Deuxnim was actually none other than Misty Fey, the mother of Maya and Mia, who had been missing for nearly 18 years.
In court, it was revealed that the whole murder was a plot orchestrated by Morgan Fey and Dahlia Hawthore, who was executed months before. The two had met in prison and devised their plot shortly before Dahlia's death. Dahlia was to be summoned by Pearl, who was given instructions by her mother but was not aware of the full scope of the plot. Prosecutor Godot (formerly known as Diego Armando) also knew of the plan, and lay in wait at the temple in order to protect Maya. In the end, Misty Fey summoned Dahlia, who (possessing Misty's body) set out to murder Maya. Godot defended Maya, killing her attacker, and Dahlia's spirit left Misty's body. The corpse was transported across the gorge to keep any suspicion from Maya, and Iris planted to body in the temple.
During the trial, Phoenix realizes that it isn't Iris on the stand at all- but Dahlia Hawthorne possessing the body of Maya Fey. Dahlia is finally defeated, prosecutor Godot confesses that he always hated Phoenix (first, for inadvertently helping Dahlia cover up his "murder", and for not protecting Mia Fey and allowing her to be murdered), but has grown to accept him, and Iris admits that she had helped Dahlia in another case Phoenix was involved in- Phoenix had actually dated both Dahlia Hawthorne and Iris in college. Iris admitted that she had loved him, and Phoenix admitted that he always believed in her. In the end, Iris was declared not guilty (though she is sentenced to time for tampering with evidence).
Everyone celebrated after the trial, Maya and Pearl were reunited, and life went back to business as usual. During his time as a defense attorney, Phoenix realized something- that it really didn't matter what side of the court someone was on, as long as you work together to fight for Truth and Justice.
