I'm no big fan of noir.

I took a noir class in college expecting to love it and discovered a deep and abiding disdain for the genre. It's too exaggerated for me. Before delving into what I like about Mean Girls, I feel I should address the major criticism that I hear when discussing this film: that the gay friend is the worst sort of flaming, effeminate stereotype. I've seen two of Oshima's early films, and both have a vibrant, explosive quality to them; they're popping with color and action. In these films, Oshima depicts a fatalistic illogic running the world, and his protagonists exhibit their free will through entropy, often resulting in rape, murder, theft, and arson.
