Whoa, New York broke ground (or, new ground) for the 2nd Avenue Line? That's hot.
For what its worth, Boston.com actually had the Baghdad bombing as its first story for most of the day (and I'm not sure the Imus story was "above the fold" (not that that expression means much on a website)).
In some ways, the Imus thing *is* more important, because it builds on years and years of racism *within* our country, rather than outside. As US-local focused media, that makes a certain amount of sense to highlight.
Yeah, the Imus thing does have some importance. I agree with that. But there are so many examples of racism within our society, and a celebrity piece on a radio host doesn't get into those. If Imus' firing means that other radio blowhards will think twice about some of the comments they make, then great, but I doubt it.
One note--though I don't disagree that Imus is within rather than outside our country, I would point out that while two of the stories I mentioned there were international (though Iraq is arguably a US territory now), two were domestic...
Well, I guess I wasn't counting the NYC Subway thing as "important news"...
There *are* other examples of racism. But this was a very blatant one *and* it seems (from the media coverage I'm seeing) that many folks feel that the word "nappy" is not as firmly seen as a racist insult as, for example, other words that start with "n".
Again, though, because the Baghdad thing was the major headline each time I checked the news yesterday, I didn't get the sense that the Imus thing was the biggest story, and thus don't feel the same way as you.
Intersting--what show was it on? And what was the take on the Duke situation? I'm wondering how that's going to play out, and how it will impact attitudes twoard sexual assault allegations...
I *think* it was this segement on Day to Day. I only heard a piece of it on the car, but to their credit, they explicitly called out the role of class in the Duke case: the Duke kids had good lawyers because their parents could afford them.
(I am, of course, personally inclined to believe the survivor pretty much 100% of the time in sexual assault cases, and so we won't even get into how angry this whole thing makes me.)

However, I did like the "60 Minutes" "we told you so" segment.
