I was a health educator--I need to post this

I'm reposting this from chilimuffin; I hadn't heard it before. But it's important info. If anyone knows anything related (either backing it up or contradicting it!), please comment ( Read more... )

One question is what this means for those with latex allergies...but polyeurethane condoms can be cut into dams too. I'll as chilimuffin about it.

Here's some examination of the topic; it appears unclear what the situation is, which probably means better safe than sorry.

I don't see a cited source here or on chilimuffin's post. Where is this information coming from?

Good question--you should ask her! She's a med student, so I assumed that this came from various medical geekery, but it's worth asking.

You wanna post a question on her page, or should I? :)

Why don't you; I don't know her/him.

I asked because Jay and I use plastic wrap, and we're poly. We consider dams too small for effective coverage, and cut-open condoms *definitely* too small. I'd be curious to hear something difinitive about the plastic wrap issue, in case we need to seek out alternatives.

Will do! In the meantime, the link provided a few comments up by dancingwolfgrrl has some useful links.

I did ask chilimuffin about whether saran wrap was more effective than nothing, and she agreed that it was, but she pointed out that viruses are smaller than bacteria, so it might be less effective at blocking viral STDs. Some of which, of course, are the incurable ones, like HIV, HPV, and HSV...

That's funny--dancingwolfgrrl posted the same link, and it occured to me that you might like it, given gboth the source and the author's tone.

I mentioned the harm reduction piece to chilimuffin, and she agreed, though she also pointed out that she made the point about viral STDs that I made above in my thread with chilimuffin. So that's an argument for dams or cut open condoms/gloves, it seems...

No, I don't think that you've met--she and I were just meeting when I was leaving Boston. It's an amusing story. Not sure how she found this--perhaps she can say?

I'd love to see the links about condoms--I tend to keep some in my backpack, but I've been wondering about the effect of Michigan winters on those. Of course, they tend not to come out of said backpack...but we'll just leave my social life (or lack thereof) out of this.
