Ayn Rand books are preachy wastes of paper that would better be put to use wiping my butthole. This is one of those few points in which I am absolutely right and all those who disagree with me are completely wrong, end of story. Anyone who buys into her "philosophy" (a term used loosely in this case) is intellectually masturbating because they are ( Read more... )

Anthem sucked balls, I really liked the Fountainhead, and I haven't read Atlas Shrugged. I think her spin on individualistic philosphy is highly extreme and unrealistic in practice. What do you mean by "absurd idea that they can be the supreme master of their own destiny", how much control do you think we have on our lives?

Oh man... Anthem is the worst book I've ever read. It's like taking her philosophy, concentrating it into a thick, viscous syrup and drinking it... ugh. At least her other books have the benefit of being interesting, but Anthem has no redeeming qualities.

I meant that you can control what you do in your life, but you can't always control the outcome. Being in SUPREME control would mean that you control both your actions and their results. I can punch someone in the face, but I can't control if they're going to hit back, run away, pull out a knife and stab me through the eye, etc, etc So in some respect, what happens to me relies upon what others do; so the idea that I can completely control what happens to me is silly.

yeah, anthem sucked pretty hard. i think what really clinched it was she used "we" and "our" almost the entire book, making a really shittily obvious overexagerration about socialistic government.

you can be in control of your life to a certain extent, but because the actions of others overlap so much and are intertwined, there is a lot that is out of your hands. the actions that are your call though, you should take responsibility for.

I must have missed that little pronoun detail.

And yeah, what you say is true about taking responsibility for your actions. That's why I don't like Rand "novels" because they seem to promote the idea of selfish objectivism that is not taking into account possible negative consequences; not just to the self, but to others. Unaccountability is my largest qualm with Objectivism. It seems to be a largely (if not completely) unsympathetic philosophy.

i think that ayn rand's philosophy is like communism. they're very interesting to learn about, but are not practical to use in real life.

Yeah, I agree. It's a fun idea to mull around in your head for a while, but it should sound silly around the same moment you apologize to your boss for being fifteen minutes late.
