I watched the anime Samurai X earlier and that’s probably why. That movie is INTENSELY violent at points (putting a new “twist” on good old fashioned stabs through the neck) and incredibly domestic at other points. I don’t know why, but watching the domestic stuff relaxes me like nothing else (another one that does this is the second Tenchi movie

i don't know, i like watching sad movies alone to really feel the effect. the presence of others tends to affect my reaction. other people end up talking too much sometimes too.

That's very true. There's definately some movies that are a billion times better when I'm by myself (American Beauty being one of them) but Samurai X is not one of them. I think a shift in reaction comes from worrying as to what someone else thinks about it or whether or not someone else likes the movie as much as you do. I think Samurai X is such an exception because it's both incredibly sad at parts and incredibly (unbelieveably) violent at parts... I still recommend the movie even though some of the dialogue sounds strange in translation.
