Roughly, how much would the brewing gear cost?

Not monstrously expensive. But there should be a set here which could be used.

Also, priming with sugar is not in the least bit messy if you have the right tool.

Depends where you buy it from and what it's made of

Yeah that would work fine, it would just be harder to clean than the proper barrel, brown yeasty stuff clings to the sides and you need to scrub it off or soak it in beer line cleaner (alkali) to get it off.

But it will work fine.
