I was reading Demon Haunted World by Carl Sagan last night, and for one of this chapter openings, he quotes Charles Darwin's Origin of Species:

Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowlege: it is those who know little, and not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science.

competence and confidence. violetcheetah May 24 2006, 22:42:32 UTC
i read some number of years ago about a psych study in which they found that those people who thought they were competent in a particular task usually turned out to be less competent than those who felt incompetent. that seems related to the quote above. i hold out some hope that this means if i ever get my license, i will be a great driver, because i feel supremely incompetent when i'm behind the wheel. most of massachusetts seems to feel quite confident in their driving abilities. my boss is always quite confident that his latest idea for the company will work brilliantly and bring in lots of money.

i'm just rambling.
