Growing Up

Growing up, Ginny had one goal in mind with every decision she made; she wasn’t going to end up popping out babies while her husband went off to work. Looking at the contents of the small box she held, Ginny had to admit she had accomplished that quite spectacularly.

After a second, mutual break-up with Harry, Ginny had set out with her friends to find herself a new man. Someone different from Harry, someone she would spend the rest of her life with, someone who she could get to marry her with little or no work.

Two out of three wasn’t bad.

Instead of finding a new man, Ginny had found herself a new woman. Luna Lovegood, Ginny’s long-time friend and now full-time lover, was blond-haired, blue eyed, and had the longest legs Ginny had ever had the pleasure of having wrapped around her.

Not that she had had much experience with legs, mind you.

While at the club, cruising for manipulatable men, Ginny had gotten pissed, and then laid when an equally pissed Luna mistook her for some sort of Fire Demon/Succubus. The sex had been great, and instead of being awkward, the morning after had been quite an awakening for Ginny. Her love of flannel and plaid, her Birkenstocks, the Quidditch, the ponytails - every made sense.

She wasn’t horrible at relationships, she was a lesbian!

Luna had turned out to be as good a lover as she was a friend. She was still spacey and more than a little weird, but in an endearing ‘can I help you search for the invisible, miniature zebra in the living room?’ sort of way. For the first time since seeing Harry in her kitchen at eleven years of age, Ginny Weasley was certain she was going to spend the rest of her life with one person, and one person only.

She just had to hope Luna felt the same way.

The two of them shared a flat a block away from Diagon Alley, where they both worked. Every day, the two of them would walk to work together, meet for lunch, and then go home or out for dinner. They were never far apart for long, and Ginny had lost count of the times she had heard and said ‘I love you’. Everything was marvelous, perfect even.

Except for the fact that Ginny was sure she was about to royally fuck it up.

In the box Ginny stared at with such fervor was a platinum ring with a small, clear diamond set in the band. Ginny was going to propose to Luna.

Ginny had helped three of her older brothers plus Harry propose to their current partners, and right now she had no idea what she should do for herself.

Fred had used one of his own products to propose; George had done an entire romantic dinner; Ron had planned an outing in a hot air balloon, stammered out his question so unintelligibly that Hermione had had to ask him to repeat his question twice; and Harry had simply dropped to one knee in the middle of a conversation while walking through a park.

Obviously, all these options were now denied Ginny because it would look like she was taking their ideas, and she should be able to be more creative than that.

There was also the overwhelming fear that Luna would say ‘No’.

What if Luna wasn’t ready for commitment this big? What if Luna didn’t love Ginny as much as Ginny loved Luna? What if Luna thought Ginny was just kidding around? Would Luna laugh at her, or be confused, or… or… or would she say ‘No’, and walk out of Ginny’s life forever?

Ginny didn’t think she could bear that.

“Ginny?”

Ginny started and turned to face Luna, who was looking at the box in her hand with a strange expression on her face.

“Luna,” Ginny gasped out. “I - I didn’t hear you coming.”

“I’m wearing boots made from the skin of the Mute Micerando,” Luna said airily.

Ginny glanced down at Luna’s feet. They looked like normal, leather books to her, but one could never tell with Luna.

“Ginny, is that…?”

“No!” Ginny said, snapping the box closed. “No, it’s not.”

“I see,” Luna said, reaching into her own pocket. “Can I try anyway?”

Ginny stared, wide-eyed, at the box Luna held. It was small and square, like her own, and Ginny’s head was swimming, and Luna had dropped to one knee, and -

“Ginny Weasley, will you marry me?”

Ginny laughed, and wiped the tears from her face. The ring within the box was in the shape of a small, perfectly formed cabbage. “Only if you’ll marry me too,” she teased, pulling out her own box and snapping it open.

Luna smiled. “Of course. Now is a very good time for us to get engaged.”

“Why?” Ginny asked, helping Luna to her feet. “Are the planets aligned? Is it the migrations season of - of something?”

Luna laughed, a high, tinkling sound that made Ginny melt. “No. We’re in love, and it’s nearly our anniversary. We can announce it then.”

“I was thinking Christmas,” Ginny said, pulling her ring from the box and sliding it onto Luna’s left ring finger. “Mum will kill me if I wait too long to tell her.”

“I suppose,” Luna said, handing Ginny her ring. “Give Molly the gift of not having to worry that her youngest child is going to end up a sad, old, lesbian spinster.”

“She’ll cry,” Ginny said, pulling Luna closer and resting her head on the other woman’s shoulder. “Her baby’s all grown up.”

“We could bring her the juice of a Christmas Bellegreen, it takes away all sadness.”

“What sadness?” Ginny asked, smiling widely.

Luna was holding her -- she was pretty sure the other woman was crying too -- and how could she had ever thought Luna would say ‘No’ when it was so patently obvious that she cared for Ginny as much as Ginny cared for her.

“I was afraid you might say no,” Luna confessed, pulling away from Ginny to smile at her. “When I saw the ring…”

Ginny laughed. “Do you know how stupid I feel now?”

“About as stupid as I felt?”

Ginny closed her eyes and breathed in Luna’s perfume. “Yeah, probably.”
