My technique for handling this is to create LJ-style friend groups for particular permissions (e.g. "can see photos I post", "can tag me in photos") and add only the people I want to those groups.

I tend to hover around 100 people in general, and cull every so often. I've come to the conclusion that if someone ends up cluttering my feed with things that I'll never read and if we never talk anyways, then, even if we were friends at one point, we're not really anymore. And while I may wish them well in their life (and often do!), it feels rather artificial to dutifully wish them a happy birthday every year and not interact the other 365 days. There are of course obvious exceptions of people I don't tend to talk much to but wouldn't defriend anyways, but... as a general rule, if we haven't talked since we became friends, we're likely never to talk at all. :)

Then again, I'm also the kind of person whose timeline goes from "born" to "2012" with nothing in between, so I might not be a good example.
