Being married to a computer programmer and all around geek I am subjected to strange happenings, such as black screens of magic (not to be confused with their ominous sibling the black screen of death). Back in the ancient mists of time, those pre-Web days, I lived in the "black screen of magic" night and day. I was content to type obscure Hayes modem commands, setting specific registers to get the fastest PPP connection possible. I was satisfied to see if a friend was online by fingering them, and then having a discussion by sending zephyrgrams back and forth. I was at peace simply watching my Linux kernel recompile, each gcc command scrolling by slowly and gently like waves on the beach.

Hi, Jess! I wish OpenID let me post as a person with a name rather than as a person with a URL, but there you go.

Somewhere out there is a copy of everybody's plan as it was in the last hours of the VAX. Your post made me all misty-eyed and sent me in search of the thing, but to no avail.
