90% of males today have no idea what it means to be a man. Yes, they've reached adulthood in physical form, but they still have the mind of boys. The usual cause for this is the lack of a masculine father figure growing up. I certainly didn't have one, and it's only been recently that I've found my own manhood (and that isn't a genital reference).
As these boys have no idea how to be that strong force that a woman can latch on to, they go with the "supersized friendship" model, the "If I can only be a little bit nicer, then she'll like me!" mindset. Obviously, that doesn't work because attraction is not a choice. It certainly didn't work for me when I was at that stage. Part of this is giving up all their power to women, sometimes to the point of submission. It's only the very masculine woman that wants that. Most are looking for their men to be strong and decisive.
It really is a major social issue that we are facing.
