I'd love to think of the Olympic athletes as embracing the Olympic ideal. But if they can't do that, then I wish they could keep their thumbs from moving to spoil the illusion...
Of course, as you said, so many of them are JUST KIDS. They really don't know any better. Why can't older and hopefully wiser minds advise them? (sigh)
Maybe they, too, will be glad if they avoid shameful behavior. If not now, years from now.
The thing is, once they put this stuff out there, it's there forever. And even if they later delete it, that doesn't totally erase it. Somebody, somewhere, will have made a screencap or something...
It's got to be a hard lesson for the young. (I know plenty of older people who don't get it, for that matter!)
Well expressed, Marilyn! It's been bothering me since the opening ceremony...all those tweeting, texting thumbs. And yes, sportsmanship should really be what it's all about.
Again, I feel very old fashioned about certain values.
Even with all of that physical talent and superb form that creates awe in so many watchers, in many basic ways they are just like the kids I see driving through town with one eye on the road and the other on their phone. They are of a different generation, and they are so young.
