[Background] Maia's life lesson was learned as a very small child: never trust beautiful boys. Her older brother, Daniel, "had been born with her mother's honey-coloured skin and huge dark eyes, and he'd turned out to be the sort of person who lit the wings of butterflies on fire to watch them burn and die as they flew." His tormenting her began small, with the typical older-brother bullying of pinching and kicking, but slowly it began to get worse. Her parents didn't believe her complaints, even when she ran away in ninth grade after Daniel broke her arm. They simply brought her back.

Daniel was killed a year later in a hit-and-run car accident. Maia was ashamed to feel relieved at her brother's death and was sure God would punish her. God sent her Jordan.

Jordan was another beautiful boy, tall, dark, and fashionable. Though her first few months with him were "like a dream, the last few months [were] like a nightmare." Jordan became possessive, controlling, and abusive. She tried to break up with him, but he only hit her more. Finally she let him see her kissing another boy, and Jordan snapped. Walking home that night Maia felt something slam into her and savage jaws' clamping at her throat. The wolf let her go before she died, and she was "only half-surprised the next full moon when the pans started. . . . That night she hopped the train to Manhattan." There she fell in with a pack that made its home base in Chinatown.

With her pack Maia settled in comfortably. She dated, being careful to stay away from anyone too beautiful, though without much long-lived success. Her life was relatively standard for a werewolf until a nephilim by the name of Jace Wayland picked a fight in a werewolf bar, the same night in which it's discovered someone is killing Downworlder youths by slitting throats and draining them of blood.

She becomes associated with the main cast when she's attacked by a poisonous demon while visiting her pack leader, Luke. The poison in her system is healed by Magnus Bane, but not long after she discovers that Simon-- with whom she'd met briefly after Jace's ruckus-- has become a vampire since she last met him. Maia nearly attacks him (due to the timeless werewolf-vampire rivalry); later she feels guilty and goes to apologise to him, but on the way she attacked by the Demon of Fear. Valentine, the man in charge of the Downworlder murders, kidnaps her with the intent to drain her blood for a demonic ritual. He also captures Simon and keeps the two locked up together, where the two make up and call a truce.

Maia escapes with the help of Clary Fray and finds her own way out of Valentine's base. Her escape is her last appearance in City of Ashes.

[Personality] Shaped by her less-than-happy experiences growing up, Maia’s an odd mix of toughness and naivete. Her initial impression is usually one of “don’t mess with me. Indeed Maia’s not freaked out by much: she can set her teeth through pain and isn’t afraid to face a struggle if she knows it’s necessary. Being a werewolf hasn’t had too much of a negative impact on her life, giving her friends and safety in her pack, and it’s also given her a sense of confidence in knowing that she is tough, and she has people who’ll jump to her defense, too.

But while Maia’s learned that being tough and unflappable is the only way to deal with being a Downworlder, she lacks certain parts of essential social understanding. She’ll forget to look at a whole picture, or she’ll stand back too far-- for example, when she saw two men kissing before battle, she merely thought it was for some sort of Shadowhunter ritual. Living a life away from normal human relations has given her a sense of reality a bit wilder than most, and it’s not particularly easy to get her to see situations how she should.

That’s not to say Maia’s stupid. She knows very well how to feel fear-- an emotion well-instilled in her by her brother, and brought back by every beautiful boy who carries with him the smell of threat. Maia nearly died of fear when facing a demon who forced her to see her dead brother; she was afraid for her life when Valentine kidnapped her to use her blood in a ritual (though she put on a brave face); she allowed herself to shriek when she had silver powder blown on her face; and she reacted violently and defensively upon learning Simon Lewis had become a vampire.

However, Maia’s youth gives her a slightly different perspective on things. A young werewolf, while she did initially try to attack Simon, she later felt guilty and apologized, accepting him despite the feud that runs between vampires and werewolves. She’s protective-- she does her best to prevent friends’ getting hurt-- but she backs off and lets people handle things on their own if they so choose.

Maia’s no romantic. While she does want a good, steady, not-too-handsome boyfriend, she doesn’t let her love life take control of her practicality. When a steady boyfriend in her pack broke up with her for another girl, Maia didn’t let it shake her and remained friends with him. Not to say she’s totally unemotional about it-- she’ll be jealous, and her canine instincts can cause her to get a little possessive.

[Specialties/Abilities] As a werewolf, Maia's standard ability is uncontrollable transformation into a wolf every night of the full moon. However, her lycanthropy does come with other perks: she has accelerated healing and senses, and she can take wolf form at will-- even when there isn't a full moon-- and retain her own mind. She always knows her pack leader's voice and always obeys.

[Affection] Maia's not horribly picky. As long as your character's not too handsome, you can probably get away with anything.
[Fighting] Feel free to pick a fight with her, but keep in mind she's a super special awesomely strong werewolf.

[Other Permissions] Go for anything, really. I probably won't care. Just run it by me first
[Other Facts] Maia can be killed by silver; touching it causes pain and scarring. Her greatest fear is also her brother's return to life.
