tutorial #3

This tutorial uses selective coloring and curves. Made in Adobe Photoshop 7.0.

>>

1. Resize your base. I made the image less than 100x100 pixels so I could fit Bobby in the picture. Because Bobby owns and it would have been funny to add some text that said MARRIAGE COUNSELING on the icon. :D

2. Lighten your base. Go to Image >> Adjustments >> Variations. This should come up.

Click lighten. It's very tempting to overdo this, but resist the urge! I only clicked once or twice and came up with this.

3. Now for some color. Go to Layer >> New Adjustment Layer >> Hue/Saturation. Bring the Saturation up to +73.

4. This looks horrible. We'll fix that! Duplicate your base twice. Make sure you drag them ABOVE the Saturation layer or else everything will be saturated like whoa. Set one to SCREEN 100% and the other to SCREEN 71%.

5. Duplicate again and set that to SOFT LIGHT 100%.

6. Now take this texture (I don't know who made this. Let me know if you do!).

Go to Edit >> Transform >> Rotate 90 CW. Then place it so that it's covering the blank white space above the image.

7. Now for coloring! Go to Layer >> New Adjustment Layer >> Selective Color and use these values.

Set it to 100%. I came up with this.

Now duplicate the selective coloring layer you just made and set that to 40%.

8. One more selective coloring layer!

Set it to 100%. I came up with this.

9. Now add a curves layer for some extra brightness.

Set it to 100%. I came up with this.

And that's all! If it needs sharpening, what I usually do is go all the way to the bottom of your palette to the base, which is set at NORMAL. I duplicate it, then go to Filter >> Sharpen >> Sharpen, and then set that at around 50%.

Obviously you can play around with these settings and come up with some rad stuff on different screencaps. These setting won't work on everything, so I encourage you to experiment. :)
