Wooyoung made his way into the dining area and sat happily across from Taecyeon and Chansung. It was rare that he was in such a good mood these days, and he intended to enjoy every second of it. He didn’t know if it was because of the hug he’d received from Khun earlier, or if he’d become a hyung that enjoyed tormenting his dongsengs. ‘The look on Junho’s face really was priceless,’ he thought and chuckled inwardly. The laugh became audible as he watched his hyung make aegyo faces in a futile attempt to destroy the maknae’s appetite. Apparently, Chansung had finished off the last of Taec’s hidden stash of mangos by himself, and so Taec had vowed to annihilate the maknae’s precious appetite.
He continued watching the hilarious scene unfold in front of him and contentedly ate his breakfast until he noticed Junho enter, looking white as a sheet. He watched with concern as his dongseng walked in, not once looking up from the floor. ‘Did I upset Junho with that joke earlier?’ he thought worriedly to himself before raising a hand to wave the younger boy over. As he’d expected, his wave had gone unnoticed by the younger boy who was still fixated on the ground beneath him.
“Junho-yah,” he called, hoping to get the boy’s attention.
Junho looked up at him then, failing to meet his eyes, and smiled an awkward smile. With the boy’s attention, he waved Junho over to the seat next to him where he had prepared a plate of food. The smile grew a bit larger at the gesture, and finally reached those telltale eyes. Junho slowly took the seat next to him and began eating without a word. Wooyoung knew something wasn’t right, but he would wait until they were alone to question the younger about it.
Eventually, Junho took notice of the ongoing war raging between Taecyeon, Chansung and Chansung’s nearly emptied plate of food, and chuckled heartily at their hyung’s failing antics. Wooyoung smiled as Junho threw an arm around his shoulder and leaned on him to keep from falling out of his chair in laughter. He joined in, and watched as Taecyeon gave up in a huff and despondently resigned to finishing his breakfast. Junho’s arm remained draped across Wooyoung’s shoulder and the two sat in a comfortable silence and began eating once again.
Wooyoung had nearly finished his meal when Khun and Junsu walked into the room. He raised his hand in a friendly greeting and uttered a happy, “Morning hyungs,” before noticing both pairs of eyes were locked on Junho. He looked over questioningly as Junho tore his arm away and stared intensely the plate of food in front of him. He nudged the younger boy with his elbow, and was answered with eyes full of panic. Whatever was bothering Junho, he knew he had to find out soon.
The awkwardness went unnoticed by the sulking Taecyeon and the oblivious maknae as they both cleaned their plates and left for their morning schedules. Wooyoung, still determined to be more tentative to his Khun-hyung, rose from his meal to begin making his hyung’s plate of food.
“Wooyoungie, don’t worry about it. You just eat or you’ll be late,” Khun asserted quietly.
“It’s alright, hyung. I meant to start earlier, but I was a little distracted,” he responded brightly, and cast a smile over his shoulder at his hyungs. “Want me to make you a plate too, Junsu-hyung?”
“Sure, Woo. Thanks,” Junsu replied, adding, “Hey Woo? Is it all right if I slide your plate over a seat? I wanna sit next to Junho today.”
“Uhh,” Wooyoung began as he made quick glance over to Junho in attempt to see how his dongseng felt about it. Noticing Junho’s obvious distress, he answered, “I’ll be finished eating soon, hyung! You can take my seat when I’m done. I don’t want you sitting in my mess.”
Junsu stared at him, shocked, for a bit before nodding and taking the seat next to Khun and across from Junho who had visibly relaxed. Wooyoung returned to the table after a short time, and the four began eating in an uncomfortable quiet. It seemed as though everyone knew some terrible secret, and Wooyoung was living in a separate world. Perhaps it wasn’t his joke this morning that had Junho all upset. Whatever it was, he was sure that Junsu and Khun both had something to do with it.
Could Junho have told them his secret? Could that be the reason Khun wouldn’t look him in the eyes? The pain of the insecurity washing over him was becoming too much to bear, and Wooyoung stood abruptly and excused himself from the table. He proceeded to wash the plates in the sink, and jumped slightly as Junho appeared next to him seconds later. Junho clasped a reassuring hand on his shoulder, and began drying the dishes as he washed. How was it that it was so easy for Junho to enter his mind and know exactly what was bothering him and how to help? He was going to help Junho with his problem too, as soon as he figured out what it was.
After finishing the dishes in the sink, he put on his best smile and walked back over to the table. “Finished, hyungs?” he asked, gesturing towards the emptied plates in front of them. The two, who had hushed their conversation as he had walked over, returned his smile, and nodded in agreement. Wooyoung took up their plates, turned his back, and began walking to the sink and his waiting dongseng, but couldn’t help overhearing as their hasty whispers began once again.
Wooyoung let out an anxious sigh, and began washing the final dishes. He reached over to hand a plate to Junho when he noticed the other had leaned in and began to speak. “I have something to tell you later,” Junho stated firmly and took the plate from his hand. Wooyoung nodded in understanding, and the two finished their cleaning in an allied calm.
Upon finishing their task, Wooyoung gave Junho’s back a tap in thanks and waved as his friend gathered his things and left the dorm. He returned to the table where his hyungs sat, their discussion seemingly dwindled in intensity as soon as Junho had left the dorm. Something was definitely wrong, and he couldn’t stand not knowing what. He had a few minutes more before he’d have to leave for his schedule and decided to try talking to his hyungs to see if they might let anything useful slip.
“How was breakfast, hyungs?” he asked politely as he seated himself across from Khun at the table.
“It was great, Wooyoung-ah. Thanks,” Khun responded, finally allowing their eyes to meet.
“Oh man, look at the time~ I gotta get going before I’m late. I’ll see you guys later this afternoon!” Junsu said suddenly and nearly bolted out the front door.
‘Strange,’ Wooyoung thought, ‘I swear Junsu-hyung’s schedule wasn’t for a couple of hours.’ He shrugged it off quickly and turned back to Khun who was shaking his head and smiling. Wooyoung turned his head back to the now closed door, and felt his face redden slightly in jealousy that Junsu-hyung could evoke such a reaction from Khun.
“Don’t worry about it, Woo,” Khun said suddenly and reached out to pat the hand he’d placed on the table between them.
His head snapped back hurriedly towards Khun’s hand which now rested clasped around his own. He felt his face blush an even deeper shade of red and quickly withdrew his hand to hide it. He lifted his gaze to meet Khun’s face and noticed his hyung’s pained expression. Reacting quickly, he reached out and grabbed the hand he’d so carelessly slapped away and pulled it close to his face to examine.
“I’m sorry, hyung! Did I hurt you?!” he swiftly asked and continued to turn the other man’s hand over and over in his own.
Khun laughed loudly muttering something about his innocence before uttering a reassuring, “I’m fine, Wooyoung. Really.” Khun then removed the hand in question and placed it gently on Wooyoung’s cheek.
He couldn’t help but smile beneath his hyung’s touch, and reached up with his own hand to lay it gently over Khun’s. Their moment was short lived, however, as his phone began to ring. Khun removed his hand, leaving a disappointed and unsatisfied Wooyoung to answer the disruptive call.
“Hello? Junho?” he began as he rose from the table and walked a few steps away, trying not to be rude around his hyung. He looked over to see Khun fiddling with his own phone and continued the conversation quietly so not to interrupt. “What’d you forget? A button? Aish, couldn’t this have waited till you got home? It’s just a button. I’m not being snappy! …Yes, you did interrupt something. I hope you know you’re paying for this later. Bye,” he laughed and turned towards Khun who was now staring at him, eyes clouded over slightly.
“Hyung?” he questioned, moving towards the man in front of him.
A smile returned to Khun’s face, but those eyes told him it was a lie. “I’m fine, Wooyoung. I’ve gotta get going now. I’ll see you later,” Khun murmured while making his way towards the door.
Something inside him told him to stop Khun. Something was wrong, and he couldn’t stand by and watch everyone suffer while he lived in his own blissful ignorance. He reached out as his hyung walked passed and moved to grab Khun’s hand. Khun looked at him then and quickly drew his hand up out of reach and waved awkwardly before heading out the door.
The tears started forming at the corners of his eyes as he stared after his hyung. So much for his perfect morning. The alarm in his phone went off, and he restrained those tears in his eyes from making their escape. There was no time for self-pity now. It was time for him to rejoin the real world.
