since im a waitres i often find myself in situations where i am forced to interact with people for five dollars. they ask me if i go to school. sometimes if i feel up to it i tell them i go to art school and for five dollars i get berated with questions like "how are you going to make any money?" we're not artists because we want to make money. we're artists because we think. we're artists because we have something to say that we are otherwise unable to convey in another manner. we shock, we touch, we provoke, we disgust. our names are irrelevant, our work won't be noticed until after we die, if ever. if you make five dollars down the line, good job. if you don't, then who gives a shit. we're artist because we give a damn about something. it doesn't matter how trivial, it doesn't matter if we just want to improved our skills, and it surely doesn't matter what other people think.

i know we don't talk, mostly because i grew sick of every person in hammonton. i still am sick of roughly 95% of the people produced by that school. that being said, i feel you and i are alike in that we don't really know how to answer that question. we may never. though this is what i tell myself. it may seem cynical, but it's what works for me.
