Does he frequently solicit play? (Attack your ankles, hands, hide'n'seek, chase, etc)? If he's content to lounge, he's probably okay alone, because cats live naturally both in solitary and communal environments. If it looks like he wants more attention, or needs exercise, try a young cat, around his age. Its character will be set, so you'll know what you're getting. Older cats tend to find kittens frustrating and become jealous of the greater attention we humans tend to give them. Female cats are often fiercely territorial.

I don't know, honestly. He could be perfectly happy on his own (perhaps he's the reason the teevee is dying--too much kitty teevee).

As for the claws, you could also softpaws the other cat.
