in which I am uncharacteristically confused.

Hmmmm... I really want to make a Fringe FF archive with eFiction, but the particulars are mostly escaping me, except for coding skins, since that's just CSS, ergo, easy. But I'm not even recognizing file extension types, which feels... odd ( Read more... )

Hmm.. What I know from my experience with efiction is that you need to have/create a MySql database for your archive - this means you need to have a proper host on a server that can give you that feature. What did you mean by free host?

Yeah I've been reading up. It's all very complicated, but doable. It's the kind of thing that's easier to do with 2 people or more. The technical side of hosting appears to be pretty tedious, but it's worth it to me for the experience. I'm gonna snoop around until I can bug someone who's been a part of creating an archive before. *pokes momdaegmorgan*

Also, I'm googling like a madman, lol. My google-foo is strong. (I just noticed now that spell-check doesn't recognize 'google' as a word. Get with the times, people! XD)

LOL. Google is awesome!

Hey, if you want a host/space for it, I'd be happy to give that to you. I can create the MySQL db for you, give you an ftp access and all you need to do is install the efiction on your domain. Do you want a subdomain for your site or you prefer to purchase a full domain? I can create a subdomain for you under one of my domains, if you want. :)

Wow... that came out of left field.

...

So did that metaphor. I hate baseball.

Anyway, that sounds freaking awesome. I wanna inform myself more until I feel knowledgeable on the subject. But that sounds kinda awesome. I'm totally willing to pay fees and all that, so I'm thinking my own domain, for the sake of having a simple web address.

It's really awesome of you to offer this. I'm knee-deep in tabs with different hosting plans open for comparison right now. Who do you use?

I see you got help with the hosting already, but if you need help figuring out the install process email me. We don't even want to think about how many efiction sites I've had and do still currently have. It's easy to do and I can walk you through it if we can be online at the same time. Or I can just try to explain but it's been like a year so I may be rusty if you can't tell me what you're looking at for each step.

That would be awesome. I was actually gonna e-mail you today to ask you about it, lol.

I'm working all day, but I'm up all night. It's 10:30am right now. I'll be home by 7pm latest. Tomorrow I'll be here in the morning until 1pm, then again I'll be up until like, 4am, probably. :)

Oh but this all has to wait for inxsomniax to set up the database first. And I'm hoping to hear back from the fringefiction comm before I choose the domain name I'm gonna buy. If I don't hear back soon, I'll just go with it, but I like feedback from fandom.

No problem. I have no life. I have some things I have to do tomorrow but the latest I'm ever out is 7 and usually I'm home before that, it's just running out to pick up the dog and coming back, so email me whenever you're ready.

But yeah, you need all the info for the database first, and ftp access to your domain which you can upload the files without me. Just unzip efiction files and upload everything in that folder. Exactly as it is...folders have to be uploaded as folders etc). It can take forever with the latest version because there are a lot of files.
