House stuff!

My offer was accepted for the house I mentioned previously, and we're on schedule for a closing date of August 29th (next Friday). I've never signed so many papers in all of my life, but I'm excited at the prospect of owning my own home. Probably the first week after closing is going to be spent doing some minor repair work, having a dishwasher ( Read more... )

I have no experience with movers, but I wanted to say congratulations. It looks like a great place - and what a great deck out back!

Congrats! Looks awesome -- I hope the cats like it ;-)

That's one quick closing, if ours and our friends' were any indication of normality.

Thanks. The whole experience was very fast, almost to the point of surreality. Although at this point, I feel like I have been moving for an eternity. The fast closing was a result of my knowing that I wanted the house, and the owner being very eager to sell (having already moved out of town). I feel very fortunate, since it sounds like most home purchase are much more lengthy experiences.

I used Copper Palm when I moved in May. They were expen$ive, but totally anal and did a great job. They even installed things and hung stuff up for me at the new house.

Your house is darling--I hope you enjoy having your own space. I didn't think owning my house would be all that different from renting, but it has turned out to be great.

I ended up using Mustang Movers, based on reviews on Angie's List. They did a good job -- I have no complaints.

So far I am enjoying home ownership, although this is an older house and has needed (and continues to need) a lot of work. I had most of the house rewired by an electrician, and I'm likely going to have the plumbing re-done. It's only money, right? Fortunately the seller gave me some money for repairs, although I've already spent more than that. Somehow it doesn't bother me as much spending money since I know it's my house and anything I do will also be increasing the resale value.

Congratulations! The house looks lovely! I'm sure your kitties will approve.

We've used Berger Allied to move us the past 3 times. We've moved 8 times in 14 years.

Don't use Blue Whale. We used them once, and they were bad news. When we gave them directions to the new place, they said, "Oh yeah! That's out by the jail, right?" Then they asked us if we grew weed in the greenhouse that was on the property. classy. We were afraid to complain to management.

Movers' insurance is a very weird deal. From what I've researched, my conclusion has been not to count on it.

Not that you asked, but I recommend these for packing: Super sturdy for papers and books, stackable, standardized size, fits on dollies nicely, no tape required, easy to assemble the boxes, reusable, easy to carry. Available in packs at Costco. We've tried other brands of file boxes and have determined that these are the nicest kind. All of our books are registered in Delicious Library and put in numbered bankers boxes. The boxes are then stacked floor-to-ceiling in my ( ... )
