People who write "lol" are fine. It's good to let someone know you are laughing out loud. people who write "lol", or especially "LOL!" after something they say...? That's just not cool. It's like trying to acknowledge that I am the funniest person on the planet, despite the fact that what I said didn't even merit a chuckle:
