'The marula fruit is also eaten by various animals in Southern Africa. In the movie Animals Are Beautiful People by Jamie Uys, released in 1974, some scenes portray elephants, warthogs and monkeys becoming intoxicated from eating fermented marula fruit. Later research showed that these scenes were improbable and, in all probability, staged. Elephants would need a huge amount of fermented marulas to have any effect on them, and other animals prefer the ripe fruit. The amount of water drunk by elephants each day would also dilute the effect of the fruit to such an extent that they would not be affected by it.'
Boooo Wikipedia article, raining on my drunken elephant parade.
They all look pretty off their asses to me. And who's to say elephants don't have a low booze tolerance anyway?
With all that human singing in the background it's my feeling that this was set up, by humans to entertain other humans. But then, I love me some elephants in a very protective sort of way, so I may be letting my inner bitch misjudge this scene. Then again, why the singing and laughing? (she whined)
It's an Afrikaans drinking song--something about 'Let's all drink brandy, yay!'
The video was taken from a car, and then they edited it later with the music. And it's something elephants do every now and then---how they get drunk is debated, one arguable way is eating a whole lot of marula tree fruit, which then ferments in their stomachs into booze.
