Alfred arched an eloquent eyebrow at Bruce, regaining his composure within the space of a breath. “Patently, sir,” he said.
Ahhhh, Alfred! :D
“These days I’m more of a… personal assistant.”
Hee!
After all this time, he should be more prepared, but Clark’s words hit him like a blow to the stomach, like a roaring backdraft. Bruce looked out the window, hearing Alfred say “The Manor burned down some years ago, I’m afraid. We haven’t rebuilt after the… tragedy.”
Bruce! *pets him very carefully*
“But he knew to come to you,” said Alfred.
“I knew he was important,” said Clark, and Alfred turned to look at him.
“That he is,” Alfred said.
Ahhh! *flails*
“Nothing is more important than Clark,” said Bruce ( ... )

I really wish we knew what happened to the Manor! I'll just have to wing it...
Bruce! I love that whole clatter of thoughts - even if these ones in particular did make me giggle a little!
I love writing Bruce's internal thoughts when they get chattering along like that! I always feel like he's constantly struggling with keeping his mind quiet...
Oh, and this little moment was just-! So lovely.
When I realized that Clark really has never seen Bruce smile--! Oh, their history is so sad here...
But writing Clark remembering his mother! Ahhh, it was really interesting to wonder what she might smell like...

It's not a view I actually like, BUT it's really helpful for my story that Martha is so fiercely in favor of Clark having time to be happy and heal for himself, that he owes the world nothing.
Ending with a kiss! Classic cliffhanger, muahaha!

Once in awhile, Bruce, it's good just to be.

Lovely chapter. I love how Bruce continues to struggle with himself and what he thinks he's to blame for and how he tries to help. It's lovely that he thinks of himself as a parasite and not so charming man, because that fits this particular incarnation of him really well.
“These days I’m more of a… personal assistant.”
Love the wry Alfred voice here! That is so perfect.

AWWW Bruce
Clark made an exasperated noise. “I did some reading on you while I was looking for your address,” he said. “You’re no parasite.”
Bruce shrugged. “Semantics.”
“You do a lot of good.”
Yes. :)
“Oh.” Clark stepped forward and gathered her into his arms, burying his face in her hair. “Oh Ma, don’t cry.” He made a sudden sobbing noise and held her closer. “Your perfume,” he said. “It always reminded me of the lilac trees around the swing. Oh Ma, don’t cry. Please don’t cry.”
Oh, Clark remembers the scent of Martha’s perfume. <3
“I remember all the things you told me about last night, I remember them now,” Clark said in a breathless rush, his face alight with happiness. “I remember my home, I remember my school, I remember the Daily Planet, I remember…”
Great :).
“My son gave everything to protect this world. He gave his life and I buried his body in the ground! And what has this world ever given him back? Nothing but hatred and pain-- ( ... )

They say scent can trigger a lot of memories, so I thought it might make sense!
It was a real challenge to write Alfred here, I wasn't sure I got his voice right! So I'm glad you liked him. :) So many new interactions this chapter! And the next chapter will be up by the end of next week, with any luck! *crosses fingers*
